Default Sound from HDTV via HDMI to Onkyo 605?

I recently moved my components over to a new entertainment center this weekend and realized that I have a digital coaxial connection from my HDTV to my 605 for audio. I unhooked it and tried to see if the HDMI connection (from HDMI IN on the set to HDMI OUT on the receiver) would possibly be two-way and allow for audio, thereby removing the extra connection.

I went through all the menus on the Onk and couldn't find a setting for this. Is this possible? I mean, HDMI is two-way but the connections I have it on are not. I currently still have that coaxial connection, which honestly is good enough since the best audio coming from the TV is only DD 5.1.

Is my thinking backwards? Is this possible?

I don't have a reciever yet but I think you have to turn off the sound on your HDTV. Go to the setting and turn it off then it should give you an option to output it through optical or HDMI.......I'm not sure though, infact I'm guessing lol. Good luck!

Sounds like you are doing things way way backwards.

TVs don't output over HDMI, just input. If you have a HDMI receiver - why on earth would you use optical?

I already have the sound muted there and outputting to the receiver. The set doesn't have an optical, though it does have digital coax, which is approximately the same thing.

Cable TV- coaxial cable into the set, then I want to play it out through my receiver. Currently I'm accomplishing that via a digital coax from the set to the receiver.

I'm really not doing things backwards, I'm wondering if it's possible to output the sound from the TV (cable television) to the receiver via HDMI. All it would accomplish is removing one more cable, but I was just curious if this was possible.

I do not have a cable box currently, and I'm thinking that'd be the only other way to do it.

It may be possible depending on your cable box. Try checking the manual.

Okay that makes more sense now. I'm now aware of a way to do that. Just stick with the optical.

I didn't think so, and couldn't dredge anything up in either manual, but I was just wondering.

You're talking about HDMI out from your TV then?

I think the way you have it going from optical out is your best bet. The HDMI on the tv is one way. The TV revieves from HDMI sources but does not put out anything over HDMI. Plus you really only need hdmi audio for high def codecs and since it is cable the best you will get is dolby 5.1 which optical is more then equipped to handle.

Exactly so, I just figured I could reduce a cable.

Heh, yeah.

I just had the idea that this was somehow possible.

Very easy with a cable box but without one I do not think it is possible. Not sure why you do not have a cable box.

Cuz I don't really need one. I have the basic cable package. I then pull in the local networks via my QAM tuner in HD. Saves me like $40 a month.

No ESPN HD, or National Geographic, Discovery, HD Net, etc......I live in an area that has Verizon Fios, TV/Phone/Internet 100 bucks a month, includes two DVR HD cable boxes. Might be worth a look if they have something similar in your area, tremendous amount of savings.

Which yeah, all those are awesome and I'd like to have them, but I pay about $50 a month as opposed to $100 a month. I get as much as 9 mbit down with my internet. I'd rather spend that money on BD movies and such.

I don't have a cable box either, so I hear ya. I use an optical out of the tv to my receiver as well. As far as I know, there are no TV's that have an HDMI output.
