Default my set up, how should it be set up

I looked but did not understand.
I have a receiver from 2001. Kenwood vr-615. Surround sound speakers, 5.1. Receiver has optical input, no HDMI. DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital.
PS3 as Blu Ray player
Samsung 4661 lcd tv.

One thing I do not get is what to boxes to check for sound in the sound settings for optimal sound? I had the video and sound out of the PS3 to TV via HDMI and sound only to the receiver via Optical. I have only DTS checked.( And the defaults)It has been good but I know it can sound better. I tried messing with settings and while watching Cars, there would be some dialouge that was 100% gone. What did I check to make it this way?

What would be the best set up. Optical straight to the receiver? HDMI to TV and then from TV to receiver optical? What boxes do I checkmark? Please, help me

Set your PS3 to bitstream - make sure you have DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 checked off in your sound settings.

That's about all there is to it.

Interesting that only "some" of the dialogue is missing...

If you go into sound settings on your PS3, choosing optical>auto I believe should check the ones you need anyways, but you'll need to make sure DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 get checked. The PS3 will probably also check off some of the 2.0 PCM ones as well, in case you decide to send your audio by LPCM.

I think the last part of your last sentence may not be correct, since if he's connected via Optical, he can't send LPCM since LPCM is only available through HDMI and Multichannel Analog, IIRC.

Otherwise, your advice of setting the PS3 to bitstream and then setting the sound settings to Auto to have it select the modes supported by the receiver sound like they're on track.

Actually, you can send PCM via optical. You can also choose Linear PCM to be sent via optical under the BDVD settings on the PS3.

Optical is capable of sending PCM; it's just 2.0 PCM.

I plugged my optical cable back into my PS3, and went into settings>auto and it did indeed check off the 2.0 PCM boxes by itself. Check yourself if you'd like. Under the optical options available, there are maybe 5 or 6 for 2.0 PCM.
