I fully admit I'm an idiot, but I really want to understand this.
I got my new Yamaha 7.1 receiver, and it supposedly decodes all the stuff that is on Blu-ray -- except from what I understand my PS3 doesn't (and that is the source). All seems to be hooked up properly, and even set properly, but when I play Hairspray (with 7.1 sound) it shows on the Sony screen it is only playing 5.1 Dolby Sound. Is this just because I haven't updated the PS3? I know the latest patch plays DTS-HD but I don't think the audio on the Hairspray disc is DTS-HD, only DTS 7.1. Or is this ANY DTS? |

make sure your ps3 is hooked up to the psn and check for updates. when thats done, make sure under bd/dvd its set to lpcm. the ps3 will decode ALL hd codecs and send in pcm form and the receiver will read multi channel or pcm, depending on the receiver. if your receiver is seeing dts or dd5.1, its not dts ma. it should only read pcm since the ps3 is doing all the decoding. you can check whats being decoded by pressing the select button during playback and it will be displayed on your tv

The soundtrack for Hairspray is DTS-HD MA 7.1. The PS3 with firmware v2.30 can decode DTS-HD MA; however, there are about five or so New Line Cinema titles, including Hairspray and Pan's Labyrinth, which were encoded with a different mapping than other DTS-HD MA 7.1 titles and the PS3 does not send out 7.1 channels, just 5.1.
I've posted in a thread on here about this topic, which was discovered very shortly after the DTS-HD MA decoding became available on the PS3, so do a search and you will find more information. The PS3 does decode all Blu-ray surround sound formats, and it outputs them as a PCM signal, so the receiver does not do the decoding. The only way to take advantage of lossless audio with the PS3 is to have it connected to your receiver via HDMI. |

Also make sure you have your ps3 set to ``Linear PCM`` and not bitstream, on your reciever it will always show up as PCM but that is because the ps3 decodes Dolby True HD and DTS MAHD and sends it out as PCM into the reiciever. You will get the exact same sound as DTSMAHD and DDTHD.

Thanks, guys, for all the help.
The PS3 was already set for Linear PCM, and connected via HDMI and I'm updating the PS3 even as we speak but it's good to know the update won't solve the "Hairspray" problem (good in that at least it won't drive me crazy). My receiver is the Yamaha RX-V663BL and while it does seem like a fine receiver I have to admit so far I'm not real impressed with the surround sound. OTOH, I haven't really played anything other than "Hairspray" -- but the decoding at 5.1 didn't "surround" me in any significant way. I have a lot of BD titles so I'll try and find something more representative to test it with (but I'd like it to sound good on nearly everything I play -- is that too much to ask?). So far the sound out of the front and subwoof speakers is great, but just not a lot out of the rear. And while there "appears" to be a setting to boost this it doesn't seem to work unless I turn off the normal decoding (which I don't want to do, right?) |

Well, I'm still confused. I upgraded to the 2.30 (latest) version of firmware on the PS3 and when I tried playing "I am Legend" it still reported the track as DD 5.1 (it should be DTS).
I'll have to start trying a variety of discs, but so far I'm skeptical the PS3 actually does do any DTS (or at least report the decode at the top of the screen :>). |
