Default How high are most projectors mounted?

I have room for about a 100" screen, but there's a ceiling fan in the room. Luckily the ceilings are 10' tall and i have a little over 7' feet off clearance underneath. Would this be enough space?

Just try to get the projector as dead center on the screen as you can. ex. if the center of the screen is 5ft from the ceiling try to mount your projector somewhere around 5. Now this rule may not always apply, but its just a basis.

With most projos, you don't want the highest point of the lens to be higher than the highest point of the screen. Although many projos have lens shift options, taking the shift too far one way or the other will usually distort the image (out of focus top and bottom, etc).

If you have to drop the unit down a foot on a pipe... do it. It may not look that great but it's better than a distorted image on the screen.

Well, could i mount the projector on the opposing wall? There's a closet behind this wall that i could use to house AV equipment and i guess the projector could be set up in this closet if i cut a hole in the wall to allow the light to pass through. It's obviously gonna have to be mounted at a height that avoids the tops of our heads, but is lower than the bottom of the fan.

That could work, if your projector supported the longer throw for your screen size. A lot of people do set up their theaters this way with a projection room and their PJ firing through a porthole over their heads. However, you generally end up needing a projector that has a lens with a longer focal length to support the throw. Just check your throw length needed for your screen size with the projector that you will be using with the calculator at www.projectorcentral.com

Great site, thanks Brain. I'm starting to think i should just PM you when i have projector questions. I'm still educating myself on all the terminology and techniques, but throw distance is simply the distance between screen and projector, correct? My room is 18x14 and i'd be sitting about 12 feet from the screen. Would a different size screen be more appropriate for those dimensions?

The site noted above has a "projector calculator". (I selected a popular projector to demonstrate.)

Just enter the projector you're looking to use. There's a "recommended seating distance" that it will give you based on the information you enter.

Yes, that's what the throw distance is. The throw ratio would be your throw distance divided by the width of your 16:9 screen (even if you have a scope setup). The throw ratio is frequently more useful, as projector manufacturers frequently state what throw ratios their projectors support.

Are you thinking of a 100" width or diagonal screen? 16:9 AR I presume? Also, if you have a projector in mind, that would be helpful to see what parameters would work for you.

Yes, i'm thinking 100" diagonal would be about right for my room, but i have no idea which projector i want. By the time i have the cash, i'm sure the whole scene will have changed. I'm really just trying to make the most educated decision i can once the time comes.
Well, i'm still confused about 16:9 and 2:35 APR screens. It seems with projectors there's so many pros/cons with each scenario. If it makes a difference, most of my favorite movies are 2:35APr.

A 100" diagonal is 87" width for a 16:9 AR screen. Throw ratios for most projectors run in the 1.5-2.5 range. Assuming a maximum throw ratio of 2.5, the farthest the lens could be from your screen would be 18.1'. If you have an 18x14 room, you should be able to create the projection room in the back of the room to shoot out a porthole as you mentioned before, particularly if you are hanging your screen on the wider wall.

As far as a 1.85 or 2.35 screen, it all depends on what you are looking for in a setup. You are going to have material in both AR's to watch at some point, and there are some pros/cons between the two screens. Personally, if you can swing it, I think a scope (CIH) setup with some method of masking is the ideal setup for any home theater.
