Default Side-Mounted Subwoofers

I have two Def Tech BP2004s and am about to put two eD A2 300 subwoofers into my system ( I'll update photos soon). My question is, and I don't think I've seen this covered yet, is where to which direction should I fire those subwoofers on the towers? Is there a theory as to towards or away from each other? (They are mirrored-- one is on the left, the other is on the right). My set-up will be the following, from left wall to right wall = BP tower, A2 300 sub, center speaker, A2 300 sub, BP tower. What are your thoughts?

The woofers for the towers should probably face the wall to have the greatest bass.

Once in my new house with the new listening room, that will basically be the layout of my speaker system set-up but using some great big mirror imaged line stage towers and a half tower line stage tower that we are building with 2 Epik Conquest 18" subs.

Since most of the bass sound doesn't come from the speaker it's self, you need to focus more on where you want the port to face. Closer to the wall or in a corner will produce more bass with less detail, but further from the wall will be a smoother more detailed bass. Subs are the hardest speaker place in a room, most people think because bass is non directional they can just put it anywhere, this is not the case the design or the room, materials, furniture all will effect how your sub will sound. You need to try out different locations to find the best sound for you, 2 subs will help standing wave problems but you really have to balance them the best you can.

This was covered in Post #73 of The Official Definitive Technology Speakers.

I own a pair of BP2000's, the bigger brother of BP2004's. The BP2000 speakers have 15" built-in subwoofers and I believe the 2004 speakers have 10" built-in subwoofers. Also, the BP2000's have bigger built-in amps.

The subwoofers are on the sides. Each pair of BP2000 series speakers are mirror images of each other. According to the manual, you can place them so that the subwoofers are facing each other or switch their position so that the subwoofers are facing away from each other. The performance of the speakers depends on the room. The manual suggests to experiment with their placement. They slightly favor placing them so that the subwoofers are facing each other, unless the speakers are very close or against a big object like one of those old and large TV's.

Additonally, you should place the speakers about 10" to 18" away from the wall so that the rear drivers of the bipolar speakers can reflect against the wall.

Also, do not connect the built-in subwoofers to the LFE output of the receiver. Use them as the low-frequency driver of the front speakers. If your receiver has pre-outs for the fronts, connect a single RCA cable from the left front pre-out on the receiver to the subwoofer in on the back of the left front speaker. Do the same for the right speaker. The internal active crossovers take care of the crossover frequency. Make sure the speakers are plugged in. Also, adjust the level of the built-in subwoofers so that they blend with the mid-range and tweeters.

Place your ED subwoofer in a corner about a foot away from the walls and connect it to the LFE out (sub pre-out) on the back of the receiver. Turn the crossover on the back of ED all the way up to the maximum point and turn the level on the back of ED to 50%-60%. Make sure you run the calibration program inside the receiver.

Set all your surround and center speakers to SMALL with a crossover of around 80Hz. For the front speakers, you can set them to LARGE or SMALL with a crossover of 40Hz or 60Hz.
