Default Confirmed: 30 Days of Night Getting a Sequel

Bloody Disgusting
is reporting that they've confirmed a sequel will be forthcoming to David Slade's wintry vampire tale 30 Days of Night. Steve Niles, the original film's screenwriter and author of the comic book series, and Ben Ketai (writer for a "30 Days of Night" prequel TV series that I never knew existed) are tentatively on the roster to script the follow-up. No word on whether Slade will return as director or if Melissa George will be back, who played Stella in the first film, the key survivor of the small-town slaughter. Interestingly, Niles told MTV back in August that a sequel "hinges on Melissa George, since she played Stella, and [they] can't just recast the lead." I guess that means she is, in fact, on board?

Niles' original comic book series actually spanned three issues, so there's already a continuation of the story out there, titled "Dark Days". Essentially, it involves Stella publishing an account of what happened in Barrow, Alaska, which brings her to Los Angeles. Her travels catch the ire of regional warm-weather vamps, through whom she learns there might be a way to bring her slain husband, Eben, back from the dead. Not a bad extension of the story if you ask me. Although, I can't say I was totally thrilled with the first film. For a good ole horror tale, it was solid enough; and the Alaskan setting was pretty artful. But in terms of plot and resolution, it seemed a might tidy and rushed. I'm certainly up for a sequel, however, and hope Slade will return as director. There were some finer touches in the original that are worth watching over and over.

Sounds good, I likes the setting of the first one, but it "missed" something. A good watch, and will give the sequel a shot.

If Josh was still alive it would have been great. They will probably cast different cast, right? Because every vampire died in the first one.

They all died? I assumed the others got on the boat and left when their leader died.

Sweet! I'm certainly looking forward to this one if the main girl is reprising her role. It's a shame Josh's character died. Funny thing is when I originally saw 30 Days of Night at the theatre, I wasn't terribly thrilled. However after re-watching it on TV a few times, it's grown on me. In fact I think I'll have to pick it up soon if I can get it for a good price.

Edit; just read this:

Hope it's not something stupid or cheesy. I mean he did turn into dust or whatever. Also I wonder if Josh will sign on, or will they have to re-cast .

I absolutely loved 30 Days because for ONCE, we had a savage vampire movie. I never understood women's love of romantic vampires, with long hair, and silk puffy shirts, there is nothing scary there, but woman love these lame ass vampires. So when I saw 30 Days I was excited for a slaughterfest of absolutely brutality, disgusting ugly, non-romantic vamps! I have been waiting and waiting for news of this sequel. I just wish the Stranger could have stuck around longer........

I'm down with a sequel but you really couldn't call it "30 Days of Night Pt II" could you? I mean that wouldn't make sense unless it took place in Alaska or somewhere with similar circumstances.

I really liked the first. It had a lot of great ideas like giving them their own language and the look of them. I'd love to see a sequel.

I rented this movie first and when I found it for $19.99 I took the plunge. It sports a great picture and good story. I look forward to another ride with #2.

I would expect them to just call it "Dark Days" which was the title of the 2nd book. But a big part of the sequel will have to probably be changed as one of the characters Vicente was left out entirely of the first movie, and some of his him was rolled into Marlow's character.
