Default DVD upscaling V's full Blu ray

Hi guys

I have an HD ready (up to 720) LCD tv and want to know what the best option is for watching DVD's..

At the moment I'm using a Playstaion 2 plugged into the AV scart socket (theres an RGB one too but i dont know if thats any better) and watching Blade runner 'the final cut' for example looks pretty damn good, theres some pixelation in places but on the whole it looks great..

So i'm curious to know what the Blu ray version looks like...obviously i'd need to buy a player and discs which is going to cost some....on the other hand I could get a dedicated dvd player with upscaling ,so do i need one that upscales to 720 or 1080 ?
Also how does an upscaled dvd compare to blu ray ?

Any comments appreciated !

Upscaled DVD is nothing compared to a blu ray. Yes, you would need a 1080p television to get the most out of the blu ray. Also, you would need a HDMI cable.

So would I be right in thinking that my best option would be to get a DVD player with upscaling ?
My Tv is a 26" SAMSUNG LE (voted best 26" by what hi-fi magazine!)

It would be cool to see the same screen grabs from a standard DVD, an upscaled DVD and a blu ray one to compare them all.

No, you're best option is to buy a Blu-Ray player. I have a 720p TV and a PS3 that upscaled and the difference between a Blu-Ray and an upscaled DVD is still pretty good. Not to mention, if you're going to invest in a DVD player, you might as go for a Blu-Ray anyway since they play and upscale all DVD's and not to mention that Blu-Ray player prices are starting to drop.

1) That size television, unless you're using it as a monitor sitting about 2 feet from your eyes to the screen, will be fine at 720p

2) There is a significant difference between this particular movie in Blu-ray vs. upconverted DVD

3) The sound is enough reason to re-own this, among many others on blu-ray

4) If you want a player for better upconversion, I suggest buying an upconverting DVD player in addition to a blu-ray player, or carefully choosing the Blu-ray player you buy, because I think the PS3 (which many recommend) is a terrible upconverter (but I still have 2 of them for multiple other reasons)

5) if that's not enough reasons to get a blu-ray player, check this out perhaps

That is an untrue statement. Viewing distance, TV size and your vision will determine whether 1080p is "needed to get the most out of blu ray".

You can also have a crap, budget 1080p LCD that is no where near the quality of a Pioneer Kuro 720p LCD and enjoy the benefits of Blu-ray even more.

720p is a sweet spot. Dvd's look ok, but blurays still look alot better. More clarity, more detail and better sound.

I have both a Sony Upscaling DVD player (I used to have a Samsung Upscaling DVD player too) and a Panasonic Blu-ray player, I only have one movie that is on both Blu & DVD, it is Casino Royal, and yes I have went from playing the blu in the living room to the dvd upscaled in the bedroom and yes there is a significant difference... enough to say that an upscaling dvd player is not nearly as good as the blu ray.

buy the blu-ray player, if you can still find a panny bd30K, it may be inexpensive enough to make the price difference meaningless.... otherwise the bd35K by panny is $299 and in my opinion the upscaling of the panny is as good as any upscaling dvd player. (at least between the 2(3) players I have owned)

Thanks for the advice, looks like a blu-ray player is the way to go although to get the benefit of the superior sound would I not need a pretty expensive 5.1 speaker system to hear the difference ?

No it doesn't have to be expensive, check driver kings sig for a first time setup. i think thats the easiest and best 5.1 system to get for people new to HT.

I have an old shelf system that does 5.1 (maybe 15 years old?). But I still hear the difference. Especially the rear sounds, they sound clearer and louder from the HD sound sources vs ordinary DD 5.1

My Magnovox Blu player upscales my DVD's very good. Not as sharp as blu-ray but definitely better than my upconvert player. I am satisfied.

I need to save up for a blu ray player then (everything seems more expensive here in the UK) and then a 5.1 system....
In the meantime i'm using my 2.1 logitech PC speakers and they sound great compared to the TV by itself but i'm wondering how best to plug them in, at the moment I can only get the jack into the headphone socket which means i cant access the graphic EQ and other audio settings in the TV....Is there a better way of plugging PC speakers in ? Or are PC speakers generally frowned upon !!

Upscaled DVD can look every bit as good as Blu-ray when set up properly....providing you're completely frikkin' hammered at the time you decide to do your comparison.

When my Planet of the Apes box set came in from Amazon just today, I had a patient and a few of her family members in my department. Her son told me that he has a blu-ray player and he couldn't really tell the difference between upscaling and blu-ray. I've seen and heard tons of people say the exact same thing.

Everyone's brain is different. We all process audio and visual input differently. That's why one speaker may sound awesome to one person and sound like azz to another. That's why two witnesses to a crime scene may see the exact same thing but come up with totally different accounts. That's why a woman might come in wearing a pumpkin colored sweater and I'd see orange while you saw red.

You may see a difference between the two. I certainly do as well. However, everyone doesn't.
