Well, since you didn't mention which movie....

Good chance they may be identical digital video encode, meaning that the same digital data is on both disks, just stored differently (hd-dvd vs blu-ray). Or they may be both done very well so you may not see a difference, especially if you do not have a hi-def screen (which will significantly limit what you see).

So, get a hi-def screen, or tell what movie, maybe someone can help.

You do know that generally, in most cases, Blu-ray and HD DVD are virtually identical in quality, they just get there using different methods? One reason why this format war was completely stupid, wasteful, and unnecessary.

If you meant that the Blu-ray looks like the DVD, well, then we have a problem.

umm, blu-ray and hd dvd are NOT identical, maybe some of the encoding is, but was hd-dvd even 1080p? I think most of the players could only do 1080i

hd-dvd media was encoded first in 1080i, then started to come out in 1080p. same with their media players, with the first one being HD-A1 at a 1080i, but a good example is the Tosh HD-XA2, as well as the A2.

When it comes to these matters, you've just got to be honest with yourself. I'm a Blu-ray supporter 100%. However, these formats aren't always equal, just as one isn't always better than the other. It depends on how much time and effort a studio spends on the transfer. A lot of movies that were on the HD-DVD format have been ported over to Blu-ray without any changes, what-so-ever. A lot of movie transfers have been significantly improved once put on Blu-ray. Even still, some transfers could be worse than their HD-DVD counterpart. That's right, I said it... because it's true. For instance, do a comparison of John Carpenter's The Thing and you'll know what I mean. I just wish every studio would utilize the Blu-ray format to its fullest.

well here is the theory

hd-dvd movies can come with 1080i and 1080p

in the sense he is right they both look same
the video might be 1080p on both
but the audio is different
in bluray it can be dts-hd/true-hd/lcpm/ac3
in hddvd ac3/dd5.1 lossless
on computer u can tell espeacially with two speakers

You can't have Resident Evil on HD DVD. It's a SONY movie and has only been on Blu-ray. WTF?

Many computer monitors Match or exceed HDTVs in screen resolution.
Plus, it also matters viewing distance for screen size.
17" from across the room, uhm, no.
That would be less than ideal.

65" from across the room, sure!

Now, 17" from laptop viewing distance(~22") is great!
24" LCD Desktop monitor from ~3 feet is also great!

One does not need a huge HDTV for watching Blu-ray discs and getting fully resolved picture.
