I just got my first Blu-Ray player (Sony BDP-S350). I hooked it into my Home theater system. My Audio is a Onkyo SR606, with only a 5.1 setup at the moment.. Hope to add two more speakers to make it 7.1 in the near future. All hooked up to my projector.. All connections are HDMI.
My question is the sound.. I just can't seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. My system on Satellite, or through my old DVD system had excellent surround sound.. But of the few Blu-Ray movies I have watched so far while the picture is excellent, the sound just isn't right. I am just not getting the surround like I would think I should.. Nothing like the regular DVD's with the Dolby Digital 5.1. I know it must be a setting that I have wrong somewhere, or do I just have incompatible equipment.. I hate my first post has to be a question.. But I really am perplexed. Tried searching but didn't find anything that really helped me.. I figured there might be someone out here who has gotten these two pieces of equipment to sound good. |

Isn't it possible that you been listening to overbooster Rear Speaker all this time and the correct calibration give you the impression that it's not ok? Did you run the calibration on it?
I Knew people who used to watch dvd with Rear at +10 and liked it.. |

I have run the audessy.. My system is set up pretty well as far as I can tell. Everything except the blu-ray has spectactular surround sound. I hear things buzzing all around me and No the surround has not been overdriven.. Never hear them unless I am supposed to when something happens behind me. My problem isn't the surround sound itself.. It's with the blu-ray. I can't seem to find the right setting that matches the Onkyo when watching a blu-ray movie. The sound just seems lifeless.. Not sure of any other way to describe it. When watching my other DVD player or Satellite, the Dolby Digital light comes on, but on the blu-ray, nothing will make the dolby digital light come on. Not sure what settings on the blu-ray to use. Mix or Direct. Does the SR 606 have a built in Dolby Digital Decoder? My settings on the blu-ray tell me to use Downmix PCM if it doesn't and Dolby Digital if it does.. I just assume it has the decoder.... I am sure my problem is just a setting, but I don't know which one.

had the exact same prob when i got my 605, which is the same as the 606.
how are the speakers set up int he onkyo menu? are they set to full band? what are your crossover settings? what is your treble and bass set to for the fronts? this is what i had to figure out when i got mine, post your settings and i will try to help you! go ahead and start with setting this, then i can help with other settings Analog/PCM = Direct Dolby Digital = Dolby Digital DTS = DTS D.F. 2Ch = PLIIx Movie D.F. Mono = Mono Movie Multich PCM = Multich 192k/176.4k = Direct Dolby TrueHD = Dolby TrueHD DTS-HD Master Audio = DTS-HD MSTR DSD = DSD Last edited by brett_day; 12-07-2008 at 10:14 PM. |

Ok, I set my DVD listening mode with all the settings you listed.. They all just had "Last Valid" in the space.
Front, Center, And Surround are set at 150Mhz. The LFE is at 100Mhz. Should I set these for Full Band? Not sure about crossover settings or where to find them.. The Equalizer is set for Audessy.. Haven't found anyway to adjust treble/bass. I am a satellite man, and can fix anything that goes wrong with that. But I am just now trying to pick up the audio thing. All this is greek to me.. I just know I had a beautiful sound until I added the Blu-Ray and it just sounded dead. Dolby Digital I kinda understood.. TRU-HD I am having issues with.. Is it the lack of two back speakers that would make it 7.1? Is there that much difference in 5.1 versus 7.1. By the way thanks for all you are doing. Not everyone is willing to help novices. |

okay next step 1.under speaker setup, go to speaker settings, make sure speakers are set to normal 2.again under speaker setup, go to speaker config. fronts and center set to 80hz to start with, surround set to 100hz, lpf of lfe set to 80hz (you can adjust these again later based off of your speakers are rated but this is a good starting point 3.speaker setup again, level calibration! this is really up to you and what sounds good to you on volumes but you need to have at least a 6db increase on your center over your fronts and i would say your surround 3 less than your center, if that makes sense, sub woofer depends on how much bass you like 4.under menu option audio adjust go to tone control, this is where i bet you will fix your main issue. set both bass and treble to 0. increasing these basically tells your receiver to route all the bass through your front speakers instead of your sub woofer. this is the mistake i made. My fronts do not have enough power to handle a lot of bass. set these both to 0 if they are not already. i actually settled on +2 bass and 0 treble for my setup but you will have to play it by ear for your speakers Give those settings a try and write back here and tell us if you notice a difference |

Also make sure you're picking lossless audio when it's available- you mentioned seeing the "dolby digital light" and you're not going to see that with lossless.
Additionally, make sure night time mode is turned off on the receiver and that DRC or whatever they call it is turned off on the player. That can "flatten" out the sound. |
