Default DVDs that won't be replaced with Blu-ray

Which DVDs do you have that won't be replaced with blu-ray?

I loved Batman Begins and bought the DVD the day hit stores. Rented the Blu-ray. Uhhhh Not really impressed. Thought it was only a tiny bit better than the DVD, which has great PQ for DVD. Don't think I'll replace it.

Lord of the Rings is going to be a tough decision when the time comes. I have the 4 disc DVD extended box sets, which are wonderful. The PQ is fantastic. Love the extended version. Except for the 387 endings.

With upconversion some DVDs look great. Others need to be taken behind the barn and shot, low PQ and terrible sound. DVD of Bladeunner for example.

Let me know what DVDs you won't be replacing with Blu-ray. either because the DVD was great and/or the Blu-ray copy isn't up to the job.

I'd probably say there are a good majority I won't replace because I haven't watched them that much on DVD..... it's hard to say, out of the 1,200 or so I have, 40 or so have been double-dipped on Blu-ray (some triple with the HD DVD) and there are probably another 75 maybe that are available on blu-ray and I either haven't double dipped them "yet" or don't plan on it.... Baraka is available, but I haven't double dipped it yet, but I know I will soon....

$$$$$ is a big factor.... it has nothing to do with whether I think it's "worth it" or not.... I just can't afford to buy every blu-ray out there

Any of the TV series I have on DVD. It doesn't seem worth it to repurchase 7 seasons of Columbo on Blu-Ray. They look good enough on DVD. Then again, if it does come out remastered with extras and commentary, I guess I just might replace it.

I won't replace The Simpsons and Muppets season boxsets I have. I doubt anyone could improve the PQ of faded 3/4 tapes the shows were mastered from.

I bought the Harveytoons DVD set real cheap. I'm not a fan of those cartoons, but I love animation, and there is some good animation from Marty Taras in that set. The set is a mess, though. No chapter search. Still, even if a decent BD comes out of those cartoons, I wouldn't replace the discs. No need to upgrade when the content is a mediocre product.

I've also triple-dipped, sometimes even quadruple-dipped certain film titles:

VHS ---> Laserdisc ---> DVD ---> Blu-Ray

Luckily, I never bought into Beta, Hi-8, CED Videodiscs, or HD DVD.

Yeah, but doesn't that get tiring and expensive after awhile? I've quadruple dipped Close Encounters and Blade Runner on laserdiscs (Criterion as well at the studio "director's cut" releases), DVDs, and finally Blu-Ray. How much money did I throw away? LDs were costly in their day, now they're worthless. So I lost a lot of money when I sold of the LDs of those movies.

The most I've spent on home video is for the Looney Tunes cartoons -- I bought the Golden Jubilee videotapes from WHV, Turner's pre-'48 LTs and the Columbia House LT videotapes. I also bought them on laserdisc -- the WHV LDs like "Ham on Wry," "Assorted Nuts" and "Gaffaw and Order," for example, as well as 4 volumes of Turner's "The Golden Age of Looney Tunes" LD. Lastly, I have 5 volumes of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVDs, and plan on getting the 6th as soon as I have the cash. (I also have some "grey market" DVDs of the more politically incorrect LTs.) Should I replace all of these if they ever get released on Blu-Ray?

Where does it end!?

it is expensive, but what do you want. you said you bought close encounters 4 times including the BD, why? my guess like me and wormraper because you liked those movies and you want to see them in the best possible way. Movies I don't like (some of which I own) I won't rebuy, I am OK that I won't see them again (which is why I did not say all the DVDs I own) but anything I want to rewatch, I will rebuy. Yes I would rather the DVDs be replaced for free, but watching things in better quality is why I could not wait for BD and why I bought it early on. I think we are just being honest. If yu are OK watching some movies you like and want to see in DVD then all the power to you. The reality is that before BD came out I might have agreed with you, but I haven't bought one catalogue that I regret because it is not that much better and I have made peace with the eventual reality.

Same here. I don't have as many DVDs, but I find I have many that were one time viewings. I have been trying to rent more, or at least wait for sales on the double dips.

I plan to replace big titles only, Starwars, Matrix, Lord of the Rings ...
and a few "small" titles exceptions, other than that I won't. I'm not that rich.

Yes, I made exceptions for Close Encounters and Blade Runner, but those movies have rich detail, beautiful compositions and photography, as well as special effects that benefits from being in HD. Likewise, any movie that I really love that has great cinematography will be a likely candidate for double dipping on BD in the future (budget permitting). In other words, I consider them art. But there are films and TV series that I enjoy, but don't feel the need to watch them in the greatest picture and sound quality of all time. They are not art; they have dull cinematography, or flat compositions, etc.

Default 300

I own 300 on DVD and rented the Blu-Ray about a month ago. It didn't seem worth it to buy the Blu-Ray b/c the movie itself is so grainy, dark. I wasn't impressed by the picture quality of this movie on Blu-Ray at all.

I disagree. The porn industry has taken advantage of every possible way to distribute their product. I don't know how much it costs to produce a Blu-Ray disc, but if it is similar to the costs of a regular DVD, I'm willing to bet the you see Hi-Def porn soon. It will probably be the "high class" soft core stuff, shot on HD video, that will be released first.
