Default PS3 20GB version no longer in production?

Did Sony stop production of the 20GB version of the PS3? The only place I see the 20GB version of the PS3 is on Sony’s website.

Distributors are not carrying the 20GB PS3, also Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, and other stores do not carry the 20GB version of the PS3 any more. Possible Sony might have decided to stop production of the 20GB version since the demand for that version was limited. If they just concentrated on making the 60GB PS3 version it would lower their over all cost of production. One of my sources claims that one can not even order the 20GB PS3 machines from Sony anymore; if that is true then Sony no longer makes the 20GB PS3 machine. (Can anybody verify the PS3 20GB is still in production?)

** What would be neat is if Sony decided to make just the 60GB version PS3 and a new higher end Sony PS3 with a 200GB hard drive with 1080P/24 support with DVD upscale for $799.99. Then there would just be two PS3 machines to choose from **

Don't like that idea at all. If possible I want the 1080p/24 and dvd upscaling on my 60GB thank you.

The last time I looked at Sony's site the 20 wasn't in stock. But then I clicked on the 60 link and it wasn't in stock either.

I was told by a rep at Best Buy that Sony is no longer producing the 20 GB model

Yeah, I haven't seen any 20GB's for a long time. Where I work, it's straight 60's. However, what I've learned about Best Buy employees is that they are more often than not complete tools - they usually have no idea what they are talking about, but they might be right on this one. Until there is official word from Sony, though, I don't know that I'd say the 20GB is out.

Default Best Buy employees

You are so right....best buy has the worst employees...some times they act like they don't even care if they sell a product. Their incompetence is why I bought my HDTV through Crutchfield https://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/icon_mad.gif

I heard that only Best Buy was going to stop selling the 20GB unit. If this is true it kind of sucks because the lower priced sku compares nicely to the soon to be released 360 elite.

The 20GB model is still in production, according to Sony.

And we've already begun a similar thread. Maybe you missed it?

It’s official the PS3 20GB version is no longer in production. Many companies announce new products but usually do not have a press release that they discontinued a product.
Check out Sony’s website they have removed the PS3 20GB model since they no longer make it. There was a lot more demand for the 60GB model with flash memory slots, built in WI-FI, and compact flash card slot.

Now the question is are we going to see an Elite PS3 in October with larger hard drive and 1080P/24 support? Is the PS3 60GB model going to fall in price to $499 in October?

The 20 GB version is still listed on Sony's Canadian site but shows out of stock.
