Default Xbox 360 audio

Hi All
I have a Playstation 3 with the optical audio going into my Sony surround sound system.
I'm probably going to get an Xbox 360 soon, but I am wondering what type of audio it outputs. I have read it does have optical, but do you have to buy a Xbox special HDMI cable that outputs the optical? Can I use a regular HDMI cable plus an optical cable? Are there any other 5.1 audio output options for the 360? I only ask because my surround sound only has one optical input and I already hate unplugging from the PS3 to the TV and back. Maybe I should get one of those media switch boxes for more money than I have.
Any help would be appreciated.

i dont see any optical on my 360. But i do have hdmi which i run to my tv. It does have sound. Just use the components for vid and use the hdmi for sound if ya want. now the elites may have an optic, idk.

I'm so thankful I am able to run optical to my stereo and RCA to my TV and have both play at the same time. I wish my PS3 allowed that.

What's even cooler is that I run the HDMI to the receiver in my living room, and the RCA to the receiver in my game room next door.... and use my 360 as a media server. The receiver in my game room is multi-room and also powers my outdoor speaker.... so I can use one XBox to server all of the audio for my whole house when I have parties.

You're setting up like I currently have mine set up (until the receiver upgrade in '09). I'm HDMI with fiber optics for sound. Works well, especially with Bioshock.
