blu ray looks like dvd?

hey guys. im new here so please be gentle to me. i have a samsung LN46A550, 46 inch 1080p lcd and a ps3 hooked up to it via hdmi.

im fairly new to blu ray. i saw the dark knight playing on one of the tvs in circuit city and it looked awesome. so i went ahead and bought the blu ray.

all my tv and ps3 settings are pretty much left the way i bought it. when i was watching the movie i see absolutely no difference in blu ray vs dvd?

can somebody help me with the settings. also my time warner hd channels don't impress me either. how come my hd tv doesn't look very hd to me??

First you need to make sure you PS3 and HD TV receiver video settings are set to 1080p or whatever the highest resolution you TV is capable of displaying. Then you need to calibrate your TV using calibration disc. I would suggest the Digital Video Essentials this is very informative and walks you through every step of getting the best picture possible with out paying some one $200.00 or more to professionally do this. Or you can use almost any Disney Blu-ray or Sony pictures blu-ray. They usually have a feature that allows you to calibrate, but no instructions on how.

Also, are you using HDMI cabels or basic component cables that came with the PS3? this could also be a problem.

must be your eyes. everything you said sounds fine. blu ray definitely looks 1,000,000 times better than dvd imo.

Either Samsung makes crappy TV or there is something essentially wrong with our set-up. HD on my 46" TV looks like watching it in the theaters. Even local HDTV channels I pick up with my antenna over the air look great but it varies depending on the source material.

Yes, Blu-ray looks fantastic, maybe not million times better but close. HD channels on my Dish Network look great too, something not right with your setup??? and or your HD reception.

If you click "info" on your remote does it show the movie as being in 1080p or something else?

Also, if you have not already, I would say you really should look at the comparison pics from the link that someone earlier posted. There is a noticeable difference that you should be able to see on your tv.

Some people just cant appreciate an HD picture, they just dont see the difference. theres nothing wrong with that i guess, to bad for them.

But we can, we know what to look for, we see the increased resolution.
and all this talk about calibration, yea it will help, but i can clearly (pun) see a huge difference from SD and HD. i dont need to fix some settings to notice a better picture, its right in your face!

I see the better colors, i see the better detail, i see better sharpness. basically i see HD!

i feel sorry for the people who think blu-ray is no different than DVD, your lost.

Hey,

Mostly it sounds like some options have not been set right.

Maybe you are not choosing the right resolution from your PS3 to your HDTV.

Your PS3 is probably set to 480p output and needs to be changed to 1080p.

Also you do ONLY have the HDMI cable making the connection from your ps3 to the TV right? no other cables connected?

Also your TV may have a setting too.. not sure.. needs to be checked in the TV settings..

Sounds like something is forcing your system to 480p through some setting.

your kidding right that you can't see the difference
first of all much clearer picture and sound and you can check scenes without leaving the movie, no matter how much SD is upconverted its still 480i

yea i just helped a buddy hook up a PS3 and get it all set up. He bought a new tv with HDMI and his old one had DVI. He was running a DVI to HDMI converter before. Just by taking it off and running HDMI it reset his video options. We had to go back into the PS3 settings and configure them.

So basically from the PS3 menu almost all the way left i believe is the settings tab. You then have to go to display settings and check all resolutions. You should notice a difference immediately.

HD is not for the beginner. It takes time to understand things. Personally I would have made the PS3 plug and play. The devices can talk to each other most of the time. There is still 1 out a 100 people still using composite video thinking its HD. The mind boggles.

Sure. The disc itself looks almost exactly like a DVD disc.

I'm almost certain you did not reset your PS3. It is imperative you do this when you switch over to a higher resolution TV...otherwise it will display the same resolution it did on the last TV.

You do this by keeping your finger pressed on the power button on the PS3 itself...keep holding it down til you hear a beep. Then the menu screen will appear asking you to choose the optimal resolution settings. After that you should notice a big difference.

i was at circuit city again today and they had a samsung demo with a split screen showing what it looks like with and without "auto motion plus"

i guess that is what impressed me. it gives that looks like im there kind of feeling. i read some people don't like that.

any way my ln46a550 does not have that feature so maybe thats why im not that impressed. overall im not impressed. the dark knight blu ray looks like a regular dvd to me. but i will try a few more blu rays since i haven't seen many of them so far. and i ordered a calibration cd, i hope that helps.

I had this same problem last year. Thought bluray was a waste since it looked the same to me and my friends too so i sold my PS3 and movies. This year i happened apon a good deal on a Ps3 so i grabbed it again. and bought some movies that i wanted regardless of what format.. I must say now, after watching allot fo bluray movies (newer movies look better than older ones) when i pop in a DVD i can then see the difference, it just looks dull, not as crisp and a little blurry than what i'm use to.. I think most poeple expect bluray to be like looking out the window when compared to DVD, well its not, but it is crisper,clearer and you will notice it when you go back to standard DVD

I have the same tv as you but the 40" version and i can tell you there is a pretty big difference between dvds and BD.
