my max price range is around 600, i understand i need a receiver that can play pcm through hdmi, my ps3 will do the decoding and send it through pcm to the receiver and then i will get the hd audio correct? so what is a good receiver to do that?

Correct.

Entirely up to you. You will get highly favorable opinions on Onkyo here, though.

Ya know, I really can't. LOL!

I don't have an Onkyo myself, and since I did my own research and bought my Sony, they have an entirely new line out.

I'd either check their website and do some searching there for their newer models and what they offer, or wait a bit and I'm pretty sure some Onkyo owners will chime in here.

I'm going to assume that the 605 (which was a very popular model if I remember right, and right at the $600 mark) is now the 606; and that's what they have on their website. I might give them a look-see if I was looking at Onkyo myself. I'm sure you can get them a lot cheaper than the $600 MSRP, though.

Sony 720, Onkyo 606, Yamaha 663.

As for me, yes I get HD audio. However the PS3 decodes it so all I see on the receiver is "Multich". Doesn't make me a difference since the end result is the same.

Good stuff. I wish that 606 had been available when I got mine, but at the time, the Sony DG720 was the cheapest, and best, entry-level you could get. Seems the options have improved somewhat.

I would look at the Denon 1909 or 789, really good reviews and right in your price range. I think the best receiver for $600.

Check out the Denon AVR 789 and AVR 1909. I have the 789, it works great with my PS3; no issues whatsoever. It retails brand new at $599. But let me tell you, it is worth every penny. Some may think that the set-up is very difficult, but I thought it was fairly simple, especially if you are using HDMI.

Consider this receiver, you won't regret it. If you do end up getting it, I will even help you on the set-up if you come across any difficulties.

Thank you Ozzman, Just wanted him to have a nice selection of quality receiver to go listen to. That is the most important part of the equation, actually hearing them.

How was your holiday btw?
