Default The Trouble with Best Buy's Blu-ray Selection

Has anyone else seen this pattern? The area of town I live in doesn't cater much to Blu Ray. Best Buy is really my only option for walking into a store and having a decent Blu Ray section. The problem I have is there seems to be an ongoing trend that has gotten frustating. Sure, major releases are there and in good abundance but here's where the problem lies. Older catalog titles just being released on Blu, either they aren't carrying them at all, such as The Thing and Daredevil to name a few, or they don't seem to get them until a week or two after release. I've witnessed this multiple times now. Austin Powers trilogy, checked in the store every day first week, never got. JFK, didn't get it for 3 weeks. But now this week i've finally mad enough that I even went to the store manager to gripe about this issue because not only did they not have Office Space, Zack & Miri was not there 4 days in a row. C'mon people, Best Buy has basically killed off most of it's competion and this is how they treat their customers? I used to work for Media Play (which also owned Sam Goody & Suncoast Video). Here's how they got rid of us, They bought it, kept it for 1 year then sold it to a investment company that ended up closing all of the Media Play's & Suncoast. Which by the way, in regards to movies, Media Play, at least in this town, had a Way better movie department that Best Buy ever thought of having. Now they've started killing off Circuit City's. So unless Wal Mart really starts embracing Blu Ray's, they own the retail market.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

By the way, online buying for me isn't an option at the moment, hence the frustation.

I don't buy at Best Buy unless they have outstanding sales. But, I think the bigger problem with Best Buy is their lack of decent prices then what you claim. Paying 34.99 or 29.99 is just outrageous. And for the box sets paying like 109.99 for the Dirty Harry Box Set is just ridiculous.

With that said, there has to be other places that you can buy from in your area.

Well where I live there are quite a few stores to choose from other than BB. Futureshop, Superstore, Wal Mart and HMV to name a few. We used to have Music World, but they went under a while ago.

I agree. I tend to stay away from BB unless they have a great sale. Otherwise....bleh.

Buy online then, not locally. I have 31 discs since I bought my first player in December, and only 3 of those came from stores because its cheaper to buy from amazon, etc.

I guess it really depends on the area that the Best Buy store is located.I have one Best Buy close to where I live and non within a 30 to 40 mile radius and they have a good selection of new and catalog titles are usually on sale on day of release or a few day before...

I only purchase selected new titles that are on sale at BB, otherwise i shop online. Amazon has good sales and good prices most of the time.

Circuit City is to blame for its own problems due to bad management.

Best Buy might be a good one place stop for all electronics needs, but their prices are not competitive.

You know it's kind of funny. One of my local Best Buy's, the one closest to me, I have the same problem. But if I go another 15 miles to another Best Buy I can get a better selection. As for the price difference retail stores have to charge more to cover cost of overheard, payroll and utilities. If you really looked at what you were paying for shipping, unless you order enough to qualify for free shipping you would probably realize you could have paid the same thing with tax at a B&M store and had it that day. So, I don't mind paying a little more on most title if I can take it home and watch the same day as opposed to having it shipped.

On another hand, I am PO'ed that Best Buy or any retailers in my area are not carrying The Pink Panther: Collectors Edition (1964.) It seems to be an online only item with everyone. But they do have that horrible remake with Steve Martin. Is everyone so far up Sony's butt that they feel the need to push that one over the classic Blake Edwards/Peter Sellers version?

Actually, I'm shopping more at BB than Amazon lately because they are competitive.

BB has always had problems having catalog titles on release day, whether it's DVD or BD.

I am a big fan of Best Buy simply because of their price match policy.

A). They will price match Walmart, which always seems to be very competitive to Amazon. Simply print out the Blu Ray price from the Walmart website and you get the price difference.

B). They will price match if the product goes on sale at Best Buy or if you find a lower price else where within 30 days. Movies go on sale all the time so if you look around you get usually an even better deal than on Amazon.

Don't get me wrong, I like Amazon but if I can find the same movie at the same price or better than I would rather not wait for shipping.

I appreciate all the comments, as I stated though, buying online isn't an option right now. Paypal allowed some unauthorized transactions to go thru to my bank account and we haven't resolved them yet. Therefore, I'm stuck buying from retail stores. The only Wal Mart near me is one of the oldest stores in the area and doesn't carry very many Blu Ray's, but they are building a new super Wal Mart as we speak. In response to other options, the next closest option is 15 miles away at FYE and from what i've seen, their prices are even higher.

I actually use Best Buy quite a bit, but I do their in-store pickup option more than I actually go in and buy right off their shelves. Sometimes their prices are cheaper on their website. My last purchase there was Any Given Sunday. I got it with in-store pickup for $19.99. I looked at their BD section and it was there for $24.99. Their website isn't always cheaper though, and it's getting to the point where I am seriously looking into investing in Amazon Prime.
