This has been bugging me for many years, but after what I've seen lately I decided to vent a little here to see if anyone else is annoyed as I. Mods, if this is not in the correct forum, please feel free to move.
Watching Heroes yesterday (DVR from last week, I think), there was a point where Noah had his gun drawn (absolutely ridiculous that "professionals" are armed with bulky, custom-made, competition .45's, but that's a whole 'nother rant) on someone. In order to "make his point", he procedes to cock-back the hammer. Now, anyone who knows anything about guns would immediately laugh at him for pointing what is essentially a useless weapon at someone since the hammer was not already cocked. In another episode, either he or someone else were in a similar situation and then rack the slide before whatever confrontation they were in. C'mon, why would you be walking around in a dangerous situation carrying a gun that is not ready to fire? Another ridiculous scene was in Lost recently. Sawyer is walking around carrying an M1 Garand. There was a scene where (again, to make a point) he thrusts the gun at someone and works the action. If you know how an M1 operates, this is comical because if the gun were loaded, there was already a round in the chamber. In Heroes last night, one of the black-ops guys fired-off a mag in his M16, swapped-out a new mag and then proceeded to pull back the charging handle to show he was chambering a round. Stupid, because all he needed to do was depress the bolt catch and a round would be chambered. These are just a few examples that really bug me when I'm watching shows/movies where guns are being used. I guess the directors and technical advisors assume we are all too stupid to see just how comical all of this is. Yes, I understand that it is all done for "effect", but let's try to add a little realism to the situations. Makes me wonder sometimes if these folks even have a clue as to how the weapons really operate. Anyone else notice things like this, or am I just being too picky about something that a very large percentage of the viewing audience would never pick up on? /rant |

As for guns what bugs me the most is the shotguns. Can't tell you how many times they will pump it but not discharge a shell. One show I counted like 5 pumps and not a single shell ever came out of the gun and he never even shot at anyone as he was just trying to "intemidate" somebody and show he was "serious". please. You shoot the dude in the leg to show them you're serious not continously pump a shotgun to let them know it's not even loaded. |

Yes this stuff bugs me. I had a mini-rant on the Band of Brothers thread because the M1 Garands are firing such cool loads that they sounds like a .22's.

*Traditional* Double Action maybe?
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/w...12&isFirearm=Y While pulling the trigger will cock then fire, you can cock the hammer manually. Last edited by dadkins; 02-17-2009 at 08:35 PM. |

I'm thinking you're just too picky. Can't say if I'm typical or not, but large portions of your post might as well have been written in hieroglyphs for as much as I understood. I don't know an "M1" from an "M16" and have no idea why it's ridiculous for someone to be carrying a "custom-made, competition .45"
Maybe you've got a point about walking into a deadly situation without the gun ready to fire is pretty stupid, but the technical aspects are I think going to go over most people's heads (but obviously not gun people's heads). Of course, I suppose I should mention the deadliest "gun" I've ever fired was a water gun. |

Another thing that really bugs me about older movies is when the folks "throw" the gun out as they fire. Sort of like they are trying fling a bullet out of the gun a-la-Wanted. A good example is in It's a Wonderful Life when Jimmy Stuart runs away from the theater for scaring Mary, and Bert the cop starts shooting at him. I always wait for the gun to fly from his hand as he's doing this (or for him to hit any of the dozens of folks walking around town at the time).

Technical thought. With the super cool loads, is there enough gas to operate the M1? I am going to look into this trivia...I'll report what I find. |
