Leaving powered sub on all the time. I have been doing this.
I should plug it in to the receiver switched plug. Your thoughts. |

Leaving your powered sub on all the time will likely not harm your sub, although some people might think doing so is a potential fire hazard. Of course, it's easier on the electronics if it does shut off. Why not just use the "Auto" setting? In "Auto," your sub's power is triggered by an incoming audio signal from the receiver, and shuts off when no signal is present for a little while.
To be sure, some people like to turn their subs on and off completely manually as well. Absolutely do NOT use a switched outlet on your receiver to power the sub. Switched outlets which are built into electronic devices are fine for operating low-power devices such as disc players, cassette decks, etc. Your subwoofer will certainly draw more power than your receiver's switched outlet is rated for. |

I've owned 3 subs.
A PSB sub that did not have an auto-on feature. So I always manually turned it on before each use and off afterwards. I didn't really mind that too much but I often left the house wondering "Did I shut it off". Never occurred to me to leave it on 100% of the time. Then I had a Paradigm sub that had an auto-on feature. It would detect a signal and turn on. About 10 or 15 minutes after it detected no further signal it would shut off. It did not make any click sound turning on or off -- just quietly blended in. I now own a different Paradigm sub. Works like the one above but it does make a small crackly sound both when it turns on or off. Not as ideal as the previous Paradigm but not a big deal either. I'd recommend the "auto-on" feature if you have it. If you don't, I suppose you could leave it on all the time but I have no experience with that. I know a lot of people like to leave their computers on 168 hours a week, but I'm not one of those types. |
