Depending on how complex the codes are and how poorly the software is written you may need 10GHz. However the trick is in using dedicated hardware decoders. The typical example is with DVD players. They are not known to have much computing power but can decode MPEG2 very well. Do the same thing on your computer and watch the cpu ussage go through the roof.

... of course, Sony and others have developed the multiprocessor Cell architecture, and even Intel and AMD are rolling out PC designs with more than one processor in each package - or even on the same substrate!

Both firmware and software solutions are likely to become available - particularly as, with a multiprocesor system you can carry on working and let the encoding or whatever carry on in the background without the front processor missing a beat ... 8)
