I would be nice. They definitely put on a show. The closing ceremonies were pretty cool also.

I don't see why it would. At least until the 2012 games in London.

I'm with you -- I'd love to grab this on Blu-Ray so I can delete it from my DVR. I'm not holding my breath, though; I bet the demand is pretty limited. I've seen some torrents of it recorded at 720p, which I'm sure looks great (perhaps better than 1080i). Maybe I'll bite the bullet and burn my own blu-ray.

I don't really think the demand is high enough to justify such an incredibly niche release.

This is probably your best bet.

Good luck, and if it works, let us know how it looks.

You've just hit on something that's bothered me ever since I got into this format. So many popular movies are what could be called "niche" releases, and while almost all of them received distribution on DVD (eventually) I'm beginning to wonder if these same movies will ever see similar even-handed treatment on Blu-ray.

You would think that growth of the Blu-ray format would be directly tied to getting as much good (i.e., varied) product into the pipeline as possible, but so far what we're seeing is the mainstream stuff, high-profile movies that most everybody's heard about, if not actually seen.

I can think of about 100 niche movies I'd love to see on Blu-ray, but I'm not holding my breath. It's fortunate that I have 'em all on DVD, and when you get right down to it that's better than not having them at all.

The same thing happened with DVD. Many of the "niche" movies appeared years after the format's launch. Look at 2 films - Night Of The Creeps and Hardware - niche films that are just now getting a DVD release here in the U.S. and the format is 12 years old.

Agreed. Those 'niche' releases are not really financially viable until the production costs go down and the install base goes up. Then, those IP-holders might be able to press a few copies that might actually sell for a return.

Yep, I'm sure we'll see a similar pattern with blu-ray. The niche stuff will come in time. Blue Underground is getting a lot of great obscure horror titles out this year, which is fantastic. And there are a number of great Hong Kong action and martial arts movies in the pipeline for later this year.

So it'll come in due time.

Let's face it, though. You gotta admit the original title in question is pretty darn niche and is probably not gonna sell that many copies. Especially since the Olympic games are now a distant memory, and the general public has moved on.
