Default Yamaha RX-V1800...future proof? (ish?)

Hi All,

Considering picking up a new receiver, and I can pick up the Yamaha RX-V1800 for @ $900 here in Canada.

My concern is not getting 1 year from now and wishing I'd either waited, or spent another 200-300.

The rest of my current setup is:

TV - Sony Wega KF-50WE610 50" LCD Rear Projection (replacing)

Amp - Sony DTC 1000ES (replacing)

Speakers -
F, C, R, NHT.
LS, RS, Mirage (in ceiling).
Sub - Mirage Prestige S10

Blu-ray - Panasonic BD-55

Connections:

Video - HDMI direct connect to TV
Audio - Multi channel out from BD to Amp (amp set to multi-in, obv). No HDMI input on amp, which is why I'm replacing it.

TV will be replaced before Christmas with Panasonic TH-58PZ850U.

All help and opinions more than welcome, I'm new to this forum and I'm very happy I found it.

Hi. Have a good listen to the Pioneer Elite 01 and 03. They are new models that are packed with features and can be had for under $1000 CAN. You might even luck into an Elite VSX-94THX marked down to that price.

If you can wait until Boxing Day, you'll probably be able to pick this up for quite a bit less. The RX-V1800 is a great receiver and, I suppose, fairly fuure-proof, but nothing ever is, is it. I have the HTR version of this receiver (see sig) and I'm very happy with it.

Many of us have found that Pre/pros and receivers are not anywhere near future proof. Power amps on the other hand are much more future proof.

Nothing is ever "future proof" companies will always find new gimmicks and codecs and flashy lights to rake in your $$.

Find something that sounds good to you and enjoy it.

Agreed on 'nothing is future proof', I guess my point was...is this receiver reasonable technology for the price point, today.

I think the answer is yes...I certainly will keep looking and comparing.

Thanks for the quick replies, much appreciated!

The 1800 has everything you'll ever need for the next 5 to 10 years AND it is build tough enough for home defense.

is getting hdmi the only reason you are buying a new receiver? a future proof receiver does not exist, so if you like the sound you are already getting advanced audio using the Panasonic's analog outs, so the sound should be about the same. how do you like the panasonic, i am thinking of getting one because i need the analog connection.

Sorry Bill, just saw this. The '55 is outstanding. Had it for a couple of weeks now, and love it.

As to the original questions, I'm picking up an 1800 next Saturday, along with my Panny 58/850u Plasma...CAN'T WAIT!!

Yeah the 1800 will be more than fine.. That receiver is a beast and if it would have fit in my budget I would be sporting it now myself..

For the price you can get one you aren't going to find a receiver that is alot better than that one.

Yes, I love mine. Money well spent. 737.00. Glad I didn't get the Sony 720 or 663. I'm very impressed with the low noise floor.. And LL jitter reduction circuitry on all digital inputs, minus HDMI is a nice touch..But know I want the 3900.

Low Level jitter circuitry. Just helps to minimize jitter to improve the sound..Coupled with direct mode, it sounds really good.

Ah, ok thanks.

On another note...there's some discussion over at the AVS forum that the 1800/3800 doesn't pass HDMI video through unrestricted...anyone here familar with this issue...if you are have you found a firmware update?

I would go with the 1900 over the 1800.
1900 has bluetooth HD radio. Sirius ready
