Default Old Audio Receiver Question

I plan to be buying a Panasonic HDTV from the V10 series and the Panasonic DMP-BD80 to play Blu-rays.

I plan to upgrade the sound system in the next year or so so I got to make sure that my current set-up will work with this blu-ray player!

It's only a 5.1 system so I was wondering if every Blu-ray disc has a 5.1 Dolby Digital English track like DVDs or if they only have DTS-HD and Dolby True HD which my receiver won't be able to handle.

I know the BD80 has the coaxial audio output which is what I use for my DVDs so I thought that it would work fine...but how would it work if the BD only has Dolby True HD and DTS-HD?

Thanks!

I'm at work right now...all I know is that it is a Sony 5.1 receiver. It doesn't have multi-channel analog but it decodes Dolby Digital through one coaxial cable.

I'll take a look at it when I go home and figure out the model.

ok, well every blu ray that has a 5.1/7.1 true hd or hdma soundtrack has a lossy soundtrack that your receiver will be able to decode.

Blu-rays must have at least one DD 5.1, DTS, or PCM track. But, only one type is required. So, you may be stuck with stereo sound with some discs, depending on your receiver's capabilities.

dts-MA is used a lot on Blu-ray and most discs with dts-MA tracks do not have an English Dolby alternative. If your AVR has a DTS decoder, you'll be fine with those discs because the player will output regular DTS over coax. But, if your receiver doesn't have a DTS decoder, you will need to decode the dts-MA track and downmix it to stereo. So, check for a DTS decoder in your receiver.

Of course, if the AVR had analog inputs, you'd be all set for lossless audio.
