Good for them. I'm glad to see people will get the chance to "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" on the big screen. They can see both films only 24 hours apart. Douglas Trumbull did the special effects for both films.

That’s amazing. I will have to see if my closest Regal is participating or if it’s only at a few select Regals. Also curious if they are full price or if they will be discounted. A few I would go see but given that the closest Regal is 30 minutes away this can be hard to keep getting rides. Also costs will add up (I usually like to get Popcorn).

One single Regal in Alabama (3.5 hours away in Birmingham). Closest is 1.5+ hours away in Panama City, FL.

It would be amazing if Regal continued doing this in October with 31 days of Halloween movies.

I'm still shocked they are doing this because they had the Regal Forever Favorites series last year but ended it after 3 months.

You and me both. They should show all the other Universal horror classics while they're at it. My favorite is the 1933 film "The Invisible Man" because of how good the visual effects are considering the era it was filmed, as well as how smart the police are in going after him.

Me too. I wonder why they stopped doing the Regal Forever Favorites? Those actually played at my closest Regal too.

Wishing that Cinemark would do something like this. Every chain should be leaning into showing more vintage/repertory.

Cinemark used to do this here in Brazil, that's how I got to see "The Sound of Music" and "The Untouchables" in a movie theater.
I still wish they would re-release "Saving Private Ryan" in IMAX, like they did with "Jaws".

Good question. I have the 40th anniversary edition, and it has three versions on one Blu-Ray disc.

FYI: The Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar aren't classics. Regal needs to either change the advertising or remove the films from the list.

It will be very interesting to learn after all of these movies play which one sold the most tickets to the least tickets. I understand though that the day/time a movie is playing could work for or against it selling seats.

Over the last three years or so independent art/repertory theaters have been seeing increasing audience sizes for classic/repertory screenings. So much so that those art theaters have been increasing their classic/repertory film scheduling and even hiring programmers focused on that programming.

Interestingly, unlike in previous decades much of that classic film audience is younger, under 35 or so. I've seen that near me in Boston, where art theaters have always done rep programming, but the audiences now are both significantly larger and the percentage of gray hair in that audience is far less than it once was. (That audience is often even larger for rep programming screened on actual film, but I'm sure Regal no longer has the equipment or experienced professional staff to run film any more.)

Seems like management at Regal has noted this trend and are going to see if older movies in actual theaters will put butts in seats. I sure hope it works! Rental fees on these decades old titles are likely to be low, so even if the theaters aren't packed the profit might be decent. Hopefully decent enough to continue this programming.

Though I wonder what happens once they run through the most popular titles? Rep theaters have an audience that is often interested in seeing less popular older titles. Regal's audience might only prefer the war horses... Or maybe their rep audience--if it exists--will want to explore less well-known films as well.

Sadly, there's no Regal cinema within an hour of me. Luckily I'm well served by independent theaters that have been doing this sort of programming for decades, including many of the same titles, not infrequently on 35mm and 70mm film.

I would think that, since it doesn't say otherwise, it would be the theatrical. However, it is giving the run time of the Director's Cut.

These will all be DCP digital presentations, not on film. Hence they will almost undoubtedly be using the standard digital version of each title since that will be the one that has most recently gone through digital preparation.

While run times given in advance are not infrequently wrong, my guess is that it's most likely going to be the last version worked on: the Director's Cut. Especially since the Director's Cut was also the version re-released theatrically in 2017 so the recent DCP already exists and is prepared for theatrical exhibition.

Before Sunrise has been added to September 22.

According to the title of the press release ("Regal Launches Annual Month of Masterpieces Program in September"), this will be an annual event:
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...302540142.html

Also, according to posts at other forums, Regal has added more locations in the last few days to their website. So if you checked last week and your local Regal wasn’t showing these movies, check again.
