Default Dilemma for me..1080 or 720

ok so i put an order in for a panasonic g10 50"...the tv will be an entertaining/watch before work tv...not a main movie tv as i will be building a dedicated theater with my current equipment...after thinking long and hard i figure i wont be putting any blu ray or surround sound to the tv..i will have my main theater for movies...would it be better to get the tcp50x1 and save $500 if im just watching cable on this tv?...i'd hate to have a g10 and have it go to waste...

Well, I wouldn't say it would go to waste, but for what you are planning on using the set for, I would save the $500. If it were only a couple hundred or less, I'd say get 1080p. Oh, you'll get lots of "advice" around here with people insisting you must go with 1080p, the picture will be sooooo much better, why buy outdated technology, etc... Don't believe it. Both of my main plasmas (58" and 42") are 720p sets, and the pictures are beautiful. Regardless of what some my "claim", set resolution is about third or fourth on the list of important factors to consider when buying a new TV. I'm not saying the X1 will be better (or even on par) with the g10, but it will have a beautiful picture that should meet your needs.

But hey, don't just take my advice. Go compare the sets yourself. Buy the X1, get it home and watch it for awhile. If it looks good to you, then keep it. If not, exchange it for the g10.

If it were ME, I'd save the $500 & use it toward your Theater you're building. Especially since you yourself say you WON'T be using it for Blurays, you might as well just have it as a regular good viewing TV. I have a 1080i Samsung 50", and Blurays look amazing on it, & im sure they'd look better on a 1080p (how much, who knows? but i'm sure a decent improvement). For regular HD viewing, 1080i isn't must different (i've heard) from a 720p. Maybe a little bit better picture but for regular HD viewing, I think you're heading in the right direction. Good luck.

I think that DirecTV offers it for their Pay Per View movies and such. I am not sure if it is included with their HBO and Starz packages.

I run the DirecTV HD tuner through my upgraded Onkyo PR-SC885. I believe that it is upscaled to 1080P; that is what the information reads on my Pioneer Kuro.

i got the g10 for $1440 so i wouldnt be as bothered to pay the extra $200 over the lg...but the x1 is $900 at sears this week...

all in all i think im going to keep the g10 as i want to be prepared for any future additions i might add...im notorious for changing my mind and would kick myself if i ended wanting to eventually add a blu ray player and surround sound

don't make the mistake I did!! I settled for 720p and then upgraded
to a 1080p less than 2 years later--

you have to think of what upgrades you might end up doing in the next 5 years-- and don't let anybody fool you-- there is a difference on blu-ray
movies-- a BIG one!

Yes there is a big diff when it comes to BD watching but the OP wont be using it for that...to quote "im just watching cable on this tv" hence the leaning towards the 720p but yeah I would go for a 1080p even if I didnt have BD but thats just me

is all cons of getting 720p consider you could resell without losing too much face value. And buy a new one like led when getting cheap end of this or next year.
