Default Need Help - Need to buy an HT system

I am looking to buy a receiver, sub woofer and speakers but I am not educated on what is good and what is not. I don't want to get stuck with what the store is trying to push, I want to get good quality items that will last. I really dont have a price range at this point until I can get some options to see what I am willing to spend.

I have heard polk audio speakers are good, but again I know nothing about these types of things. Can anyone please let me know what I can get to have a really good setup.

Do you at least have a ballpark figure as far as what you want to spend? Some kind of an idea would help, as I am not sure if you want top end equipment or something much more budget minded.

There are also about 10000 posts just like this you can filter through in the search and or in the home theater section. FYI

The following is a quote from Big Daddy that he posted in another thread (I hope he doesn't get mad at me for copying it here). Anyway, it lists several internet direct speaker companies where you can get top-notch speakers at great prices. Look through these sites and you will be able to get a good idea of what a good speaker setup will cost you. There are subwoofer specialty sites here as well. For a receiver, I would say budget another $500-$1000.

For subwoofers, I'm also going to add Elemental Designs and Epik to the list. And SVS offers great subs and regular speakers as well.

Budget would really help, but if you don't have any idea then at least give us some details:

Room size?
Speaker size: Towers, bookshelves, or Satellite?
how many speakers: 2.0,2.1,5.1, 7.1?

For a start I'd look at different threads on the brands:
AVR: Pioneer, Denon, HK, Marantz, Yamaha, ...
Speakers: Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics, Paradigm, Energy, PSB, ...
Sub: eD, HSU, Outlaw Audio, AV123, ...

I would spend 25% on AVR, 25% on sub, and 50% on speakers for a 5.1 system.

OK.. So, I would say my budget would be around $1,000 to $1,500. I would like something that I could use with HDMI cables and I have also heard that polk audio speakers are one of the best.

I am really try to stay within the budget, hoping to find some good sales. I am not willing to go any higher than $1,750 at this time.

Any advice based on the budget? At this time I have absolutely nothing and I am tired of barely hearing some of my blus.

there are hundreds of threads around here, including stickies that can give you an idea where to start. we can give you as many suggestions as we can, provided you can assist us in your current situation as well...

as stimpsonjcat as mentioned, we need specs to further the process. it takes a good amount of time, research and auditioning to get the perfect home theater.

I am looking at these HT systems, any thoughts on the quality of the product or sound:

Samsung - 650W 5.1-Channel Home Theater System
Model: HT-AS730ST/XAA
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218070355491

or I was looking at this type of set up:

Yamaha - 525W 5.1-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver
Model: RX-V465
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218066769902

along with some decent speakers

Read through this thread posted by Driver King. There's a lot of good information and references there for people new to HT. There's also a recommended first time setup in the first post with prices that fall within your max budget. You could step down one or two steps on the suggested receiver and come in well within your budget. Check it out.
