I wish I could help, but I don't really know too much about this subject. My best bet would be to ask CrazyBlue or Big Daddy as they often speak about it.

Mike ~ When I decided to treat my room to make it sound better I spent a lot of time here ~ https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=93826
Going threw all the research material & trying to understand what sound & sound waves do within A room !!!

Of course Big Daddy Is always A BIG HELP when IT comes to sound , He has left these picks in my thread ~ https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=626

As for the question on the bi-polar speakers that is something to ask BD for I don't know !

Here is where I got the foam ~ excellent prices .

Unless someone has a clear reason why Auralex foam (wall panels) would be better, I also suggest foamfactory- it will save you a TON of cash, and they have a good selection. I will be placing an order soon.

If you're not overly concerned with aesthetics, I'd check out "Foam By Mail" that's where I got mine.....

regarding cheap foam, be wary of faster than expected colour degradation (yellowing occurs due to oxidisation in a matter of weeks) and the foam starts to 'dust' quickly too. Auralex and RPG charge more for their foams, but they will not discolour and dust as the foam is different. In the UK we have our foam specially made, with added ingrediants to prevent yellowing and dusting, performance gains are less obvious but i would still rather use the more costly if I specify any at all.

For speakers that rely on sound being bounced off the walls i prefer to use combination panels near to the speakers to give best effect however if the panels are a long way behind the speakers it canbe beneficial in removing early reflections that colour the sound too much

see its not a matter of adding on foaming at the back of the speakers, its more of his def techs are bipolar, thus his concern.

personally, i havent really had much experience with def techs, and i too, would find it moot if it wouldnt benefit me at one point to do so.

i would consider adding acoustic treatments, but might consider liquids proposal, and start from there.

we also have a acoustic treatments thread as well, i leave that up to you to look for.

jomari - who crazy again has left out in the dark. sure it was my thread but....

talking to the manufacturers can help, but having had similar conversations with 2 companies here in the UK it doesnt always work out that you get someone who knows the answer.

This really is common sense here. Def tech speakers are bipolar speakers who's frequency balance depends on the late arriving reflection from the rear to give it its sense of openness. If you put foam on the walls behind it, you will upset that balance which may be good or bad depending on the room itself. For home theater, bipolar speakers are not IMO ideal, but for music they have merit. I would not place the foam behind any bipolar speaker, it would defeat it very purpose...a bipolar speaker pattern.

Check out some of the measurements on Real Traps' web site, specifically their product comparisons. It's very interesting how much measurable difference exists between different varieties of foam. As you'll see from that link, the stuff from Foam By Mail is crap; on the same page you'll see that the Auralex product is far better.

As for saving a ton of cash, remember: you don't get what you don't pay for...

Why not spray the foam with some of your ladies hairspray? Wouldnt this help slow the degridation process of the foam, kind of like what you do to cat-tails you pick out of a pond? Just an idea Try at your own risk

Combination diffusor/absorber work well with bipolars Sir Terrance, the ambiance is still there when diffused, but I dont put foam or panels on the wall behind if its closer than a meter to the rear of the unit
