Japan Appleseed - Ex Machina

Appleseed Ex Machina Japan Version
Release by Pony Canyon

Quote:
Video: 1080p MPEG-4 AVC 1.78:1
Audio: Japanese PCM 5.1, English PCM 5.1, Commentary 2.0 (Japanese Audio)
Subtitles: English, Japanese
Size: BD50
Region: Free
Overall, a much better release than the Warner version.

In contrast to the Japanese HD-DVD, 30GB vs 50GB, TrueHD 5.1 Japanese vs PCM 5.1 Japanese, DD 5.1 English to PCM 5.1 English .

Cover Art is much better than the Warner version as well. HD-DVD has no real cover (as the HD-DVD was part of a 4 Disc set).

Was this just released? I've had the JP HD DVD import for quite sometime now and finally was able to do a quick comparison to Warner's release after getting it for $5 from the forums. I only reviewed the first 10 minutes, but I couldn't tell much if any difference in terms of PQ. But the HD DVD's TrueHD audio is a step above Warner's lame Dolby Digital track. Dialogue was much more crisp on the HD DVD and LFE is tighter. At times, the DD seemed very quiet during certain action sequences however there were moments where the score seemed to output a slight higher volume to the rears than the TrueHD track. Overall, the DD track just seemed to be a bit muted and dull. The JP PCM track should sound excellent.

The Japanese and English PCM tracks were great. I felt it had greater clarity than the TrueHD track on the HD-DVD. The PQ looked ever so slightly better on the BR version as well.
BR - Pony Canyon
PQ: 4.5/5
AQ: 5/5
HD-DVD - Pony Canyon
PQ: 4.25/5
AQ: 4.5/5
BR - Warner
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 3/5

I was blown away more by the PCM track tbh.

The disc is Region Free. If you watch the movie in English, you can only turn on Japanese subs. When you watch the movie in Japanese, you can only turn on English subs. Commentary is not subtitled.

Also wanted to mention, there are extras on this disc. They are all in Japanese. I can't tell atm what they all are, but the ones I could tell were TV trailers, among others.
