Lightbulb PS3 overheating?

I've never used my PS3 to play my blu's.
But i just bought my own TV so I went ahead and got my HDMI cable and I was set. Except now it's ridiculously LOUD and I'm afraid it will overheat.

I know everyone always says how noisy the PS3 is, but I have never had any problems with it. Is it really because it's now finally on FULL 1080p output, or is it not normal?

That depends. Which model do you have? The 60GB and 20GB models are the noisy ones. The models created after that use a new chipset which decrease fan noise to almost nothing.

This thread might be of some help.

I have the 40GB one.
I just connected my PS3 to my standard tv, and I'm not getting any image.
This sucks.

Connected using what kind of cables? If you had it hooked up HDMI and are trying to switch back to composite, you need to change the video settings first. Turn on the system and hold down the power button until you hear a second set of beeps. This will take you to the video settings so you can switch it back to composite video.

Where did you hear this crap from? I have a 20GB model and it barely makes any noise except when I load a disc.

My 60GB is quiet as well, but it's in a very well-ventilated open rack with no heat sources near it.

Use the search fuction, dude. It's pretty well known on these forums. The older models are louder.

Lol, thanks. I guess you can consider the 40GB and 80GB (w/MGS4) as older models now.

A lot of people over the years have complained that their older PS3's (20GB etc.) were a lot louder than the new 80GB's. I've never heard anyone complain about an 80, so I think that's where he got that info

Your right! I have the original 60g ps3 and the fan gets loud even when well ventilated. I got the 160 g uncharted edition for the bedroom and it is a Huge difference. So huge that I have the loud 60g in the bedroom now.

I have a 40G Ps3 and it used to be silent until the last quarter of a 120minute movie. Nowadays after about 16 months of non stop usage as a blu ray player it starts the fans after 15 minutes through a movie. Very loud!!!

my 80gig (one of the current production models) is insanely quiet
i can't even hear the fan, even if i stand next to it with no volume

i just pulled an all nighter with my two cousins on Burnout Paradise (5.5+ hours) and i touched it (all sides) right before i shut it off, it was totally cool on all sides, no loud fan/overheating, nothing

Reason the older PS3's are hotter is because:
A: People don't clean dust out of the inside by spraying compressed air through the back leading to alot of dust getting stuck on the fan.
B: The older PS3 CPU/CPU uses a 90nm process while the newer ones use 65nm and in future 45nm.

I have a 80g model (the motorstorm pack) and it's SO NOISY... I'm scared sometimes that it will explode or something... and it's not in a close cabinet anymore.... I'll try the compressed air thing, might work....

But it's more noisy when I play games rather than Blu-ray....

Room temp might be a factor too. My 60 only gets louder if the room temp goes up.

This may be stupid, but climate and hieght may also be significant factors. I've heard of defocusing problems etc with projectors relating to this, so I guess it could apply here as well.
