Default Burn in time on Plasmas.

Just got the LG plasma up and running about 4 weeks ago, and had told the youngins NOT to leave it stopped or paused on a movie for overly long. Well besides the blu ray player has a screen saver feature on it though. Went downstairs last night and sure enough, tv was paused all night. I think it was the cable box was shut off and not the tv. The tv must have a feature on it of some sorts (I have not read the instruction manual yet!) that detects no signal or something and says "press any button to view" that bounces all over the screen every 5 seconds or so. But the screen being background grey, you can tell every spot on the screen that has said that. Now that has happened before and when I switched inputs it went away, or shut off the tv. How long till that will be there forever is what I was wondering. Thanx!!

burn in on plasmas these days is very rare, not saying that it does not happen because it can, however you have to really try. 15 + hours with the same static image will cause burn in on plasmas

This is one of the reasons to go with LCD.

not so much, although uncommon LCD sets can suffer from burn in too well technically the term for this issue on LCD's is image persistence

So what's the recommended.... well, everything when I do get my plasma here shortly?

What should I do and not do? How long should I wait for calibration by a pro? Does the tv come wiht a timer so I know how many hours it has been used?

Or you could just not leave static images on your screen for 16 hours at a time and enjoy the more lifelike picture of the plasma.

It won't 'burn in'.

It is 'image retention' and I can't think of a single instance where it's permanent.

A friend of mine picked up four plasmas super cheap from the SLC airport awhile back that had been used over three years without ever being turned off to display flight status... They looked horrible. Within a month they were all just fine again.

I personally had a 50" panny plasma for over 10 years that had games paused all the time... I can even remember leaving the Neverwinter Nights Toolset up on it for DAYS at a time (totally static tool hud) without any 'burn in' (just some small retention that just went away and was barely noticeable during viewing anyway).

Burn in is something that unfortunately carried over from the 1st gen of plasmas I think and for some reason people still talk like it happens. It's just not true.

Along with their better blacks, color reproduction, motion resolution and... oh wait, those're all things that plasma does better!

My 1.5-year old Sammy LCD is starting to give me image retention problems. It stinks. I've been told I shouldn't have this issue, but I do.

Have you calibrated the display?

An LCD shouldn't get IR unless you leave it at the factory "vivid" settings, in which case you could be shortening the life of the television.

It's probably not under warranty anymore, being more than a year.

Yeah, it's driving me crazy. It is model LN-T4061F. What happens is this:

As soon as I bought the TV in January 2008, I checked out this site & others for best settings. I took it off dynamic/vivid right away, and set the video so as to be pleasing to my eye but also used a lot of user settings found on this site as the starting point. Backlight and Contrast are down to respectable levels and not cranked up.

So a month or so ago, I notice that I can see where black bar lines are going through my Comcast TV image. I started a thread here about it but it didn't get many responses.

It is definitely retaining an image. I can play XBOX or PS3, and then go to TV and I see certain images (health bar, for example). I can watch a 2.35:1 blu-ray, and then a 1.85:1 behind it, and the top & bottom of the screen are tinted green. Very distracting & ugly. The only cure I've found is to just shut it off for a little while, then I seem to get a fresh start with no image retention. I'm not sure what's going on...

My original thread about this: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...mage+retention
I didn't have all my facts straight. For example, I thought this was only happening when the TV had been on for several hours. I no longer think that's true.

No, but the dozens upon dozens of professional reviews do.

First of all why are you trolling in the plasma sub section of the forum?

Maybe some time getting educated is in order.

The following is taken directly from Consumer Reports. They are probably about the least biased source on the topic I could imagine. Their statements pretty much state exactly what "aramis109" claimed.

Quote:
The best plasma TVs are better than LCD sets at displaying deep blacks and tend to have better contrast, which makes for rich, natural-looking images, especially in dim lighting. They're also better than LCDs at handling motion without blurring the image, though some new 120Hz LCDs are showing improvement in that area

Good luck with that opinion, especially here. By the way- what do you think I came from before this? Oh yeah... LCD! Seriously, go troll somewhere else. You have no traction.

Sounds like it might be grayscale degradation. Play around with the contrast and brightness to see if that helps minimize it, otherwise I'm out of ideas.

You forgot to mention the viewing angle problems of LCD HDTVs. Not something my Plasma suffers from.
