Default Help me design new apartment HT

Hello everyone, I just wanted to offically say hi. My current situation is that I just moved into a 1200sq apartment with a pretty big living room. I would like to set this room up to be a modern yet custom HT area. The girlfriend is with me on setting it up right as she is a movie junky. Well I just picked up my first HDTV DLP 60" last week and have HD cable, up-converting dvd player (soon to be I hope PS3) and a PS2. I have tried playing my PS2 on this tv and have pretty much ruled it out, as the screen is just to large to support the horrid graphics of the PS2. Anyways, before I get into surround sound I would like to get at-least a bookcase to store dvd's and my componets that I am using now. Not sure I want to deal with an AV rack just yet. I am just looking for some opinons on what I can do with this space. Here a picture of what I will be working with. All idea's will be considered and am pretty open to alot of things! So if you would, help me design this modern HT and will post pictures along the way! I'm super excited to have found this forum along with the avs one! So far im thinking of some ikea bookcases with maybe one of those over tv storage cases. Also the new couch should be here this week

All of the speaker wire would be run under the carpet. I pulled it up around the edges to re run the cable line. The cable output is actually on the other wall, but I ran a 50ft rg6 quad around to where its at now.

if you can find a taller tv stand your tv is sitting a little low, speaker wire would be the trickiest i would think, but you're planning on running under the carpet? that would be good, if you can do it without damaging the carpet. and finally im not sure getting a sub would be the best idea because those low frequency sounds really travel well. your neighbors will be enjoying the movie too even at low volume levels.

I was thinking the same thing about the tv stand, but the new couch we are getting is a section with a chaise and it sits pretty low to the ground, so thats why I went with the lower tv stand from Ikea. What I would really like to do is just get some furnishings for the area first maybe a bookcase and some other things, but im not to much of a designer. And routing the cabling around the edge of the carpet will not ruin it. All your doing is pulling the carpet off of the tacks and running the wiring under the baseboard

I believe for the look you're going for, Ikea will have the selection and choices you need. I think I will be putting together a nice long low-profile console (Ikea) with heavy modifications like cooling fans. -- I cant find it (under $1000) so I will partially DIY it...

check out my HT.

Im using two bookshelves similar to the Ikea's youre looking at...and I simply made (from home depot), the center bridge to keep my center channel speaker. It was easy to make and fairly cheap. Not to mention, fun to build.

Granted, its not the "coolest" setup, but it does look nice. Granted, my wife does have all types of retarded crap on the shelves...but at least you can hold your stuff.

I like the idea of the speakers on the side as well, but would like to get the componets out from under the tv look and put them on a case of some sort like the one pictures. I like your bridge to the other side where your middle speaker is! I'd like to get the book case and then a DVD standing case similar to the besta and then two standing speakers on either side of those two things. I might run out of wall space! stupid couch! Hopefully we will have this to set up this week!

If you're able to spend a bit more, and want the actual rack look- try racksandstands.com. For about $200 you can get pretty nice rack around 4 feet high.

Please, everyone, contain the jokes...

Then I would consider mounting a rack on the wall to hold the components......

Floating glass shelves perhaps.

How do you think this will look/work for a AV rack of sorts? Picture kind of makes it look brown, but its suppose to be Ikea's brown black.....
