Default 2D - 3D - call me crazy, but.....try it

Maybe most of you will say I'm nuts, but a few weeks ago I had this long talk with an out-of-state friend who is also a BluRay fan. The conversation got around to 3D on disc and he pointed out the following and, damn if it doesn't work, sort of.......

He pointed out that 3D movies are shot with two camera lenses and are viewed through a pair of lenses to match our two eyes. Obvious, right? But a 2D movie is shot with one lens yet still viewed with two eyes. He insisted that a single camera lens does indeed capture a certain amount of depth, but that it is lost when we view the film with two eyes. He suggested that I go out and buy an eye patch at a local drug store and try watching a film with the patch on. He also said it is necessary to first determine which of the two eyes is the weaker and that is the one to be covered.

HOT DAMN!!!! There may not be flaming arrows leaping off the screen, but a certain amount of depth does indeed become apparent. Next I bought a second eye patch and ran a film for a near-by friend and he agreed. Try it.

How does it look with both eye patches on at the same time?

I learned in college bars that I will try almost anything once. That Prairie Fire shot steaming from the microwave still gives me nightmares.

While it sounds reasonable, it's ODD. I will mostly likely try after a few drinks.

take a pic of you and your friend sitting there watching a movie with eye patches on. I would like to see that.

doesn't it get annoying after a while?

Even if this is does work, I think I'll deal with the lack of depth just to not have to cover up one eye each time I watch a movie.

I can't imagine that would be a good thing to do for your vision over a prolonged period of time.

Most likely, the uncovered eye will begin to flutter quickly to take in more information. People who lose an eye experience this. It's an attempt by the brain to compensate for lack of depth perception. This may take a long time to happen though.

But you know, a well place AAARG in Pirate dialect can explain much.

I would only try this while watching Pirates of the Caribbean. That way if someone walked in, I would belt out a hearty, "Yarrrrrrrrrrr!" and not look like complete tool.

...no wait, I'd still look like a tool.

Yeah but it softens the blow and makes you look like a fan of the movies.
LMAO at what you said though.

He's actually somewhat right... I've noticed it a bit, but I certainly don't make it a habit. Hurts.

I would have to say it's totally your brain telling you it's somewhat 3-d from a 2-d image.

Explaination: We see in 3 diminsion hence the 3-d.
1. height
2. width
3. depth
which oh course we all know.

When a picture is taken the camera see's the other stuff as well. but because it can only display 2-d the 3rd dimision is mixed (lack of better words) and squezzed in wiht the oter two. that is where the old saying of the camera adds like 5-15 lbs becasue visually we do. the camera is unable to replicate the 3rd dimision. With 3-d movies or technolgy. The camera is manipulated with multiple pictures and glasses are use to help recreate that 3rd dimision. Our brain is tricked into thinking we are seeing all 3 dimison when in reality we aren't

The brain in a wonderous machine. able to trick our basic inputs.

yes I know most people already know this. but the idea of seing 3-d form a 2-d source using only one eye. is well a fun time for a bunch of drunks. It scientificaly, and visually doesn't even make sence.

feel fre to flame I'm sure I'll get it.

if you cover one ear the sound from your fronts will be in "3-D Stereorama". so no need for surrounds or center channel. but remember to cover the ear opposite to the eye that is already covered for the the full glorious effect to happen.
