Question PCM or DD 5.1?

What is the best audio format to choose from PCM uncompressed or dolby digital 5.1

PCM is uncompressed digital audio (Pulse Code Modulation), Dolby Digital is a compression codec to reduce filesize (which compromises quality). So PCM is the way to go.

Remember you need to have a reciever with HDMI inputs to really enjoy PCM.

Not if you have a standalone player with analog outputs

The sound quality is signifigantly improved no matter the level of your equipment.
It is an UNCOMPRESSED, LOSSLESS track that is suppossed to be Transparent to
the original Master audio.

Forgot about that. It's my PS3 brain talking instead of standalone brain.

I have my Sammy 1200 hooked up to my analog inputs on my Yamaha .
Now should I use the pure direct option on the Yamaha ?

You should have a setting called "Multi Channel In" or something like that.

Give us the model # and I'll look it up in the manual if that's not what it's called.

Wow, 10 times! I've been thinking about getting an HDMI receiver for PCM audio but wondered if the quality increase was really worth the 600-800 dollars I'm thinking about spending.

My Denon has the pure direct option as well. Basically it will turn off anything not related to audio to avoid interferences. But, if you want to watch a BD, video is kind of essential So, check your manual, if it is the same thing then the option is not an option. On the other hand, the improvement is not as drastic as going from DD to PCM...

To be honest, I've tried the Pure Direct on my Yamaha, and it's not really that much better. I'd leave it off, especially if you want to see the movie .

I don't have video through my receiver, just audio.
Video is direct from Sammy 1200 to Sammy Rear Projection.
That is why I was asking about Pure Direct.

Default uncompressed audio

Hi guys, uncompressed audio is far better than 5.1, I did enjoy very much Apocalipto, it comes with a set up where you can choose from uncompressed LPCM 5.1 audio or DTS 5.1 audio, if you make power dvd to show the information it say Audio LPCM 5.1 with a bitrate of 6912 Kbps. its fantastic. This mode is a winer.
