Default Why aren't TV Broadcasts showing SD anamorphic content

So a thought crossed my mind. Why don't we have sd broadcast in 16x9 ratio. After a quick google search and it appears that ATSC standard includes such format

Quote:
FYI 704x480 is available in 60i, 60p,30p and 24p and in either 4:3 or 16:9
according to ATSC standards. So YES, you can have 16:9 480I.
It seems at least in the UK there are sd widescreen broadcasts but not in the US. Obviously we're moving to hd so why bring up soon to be obsolete format?
However you'd think it would be something that's possible. So that at least people with out hd content won't think to stretch 4x3 broadcasts to their new hdtv (something that happens waayyyy too often)...is anamorphic sd broadcast possible currently for US broadcasters?

I have Comcast HD and the SD signal only go as high as 480p and on some broadcasts it does go to 16:9. I havent seen that in 480i as of yet but I know its there in 480p.
