Default Rumor: Taiwanese firms awarded PS3 Slim manufacturing contracts

Rumor: Taiwanese firms awarded PS3 Slim manufacturing contracts
by Richard Mitchell { Jun 30th 2009 at 1:50PM }

Quote:
Another possibly "frustrating" leak for Sony, word comes from our buddies at Joystiq Japan and Engadget Chinese that two Taiwanese manufacturing companies have been awarded contracts to build Sony's new streamlined PS3, affectionately known as the PS3 Slim. According to UDN.com, half of the orders have gone to Taiwanese group Foxconn, while the other half has gone to Pegatron. The units are expected to start shipping in early July "to cope with expected summer vacation demands."

The news has a ring of truth to it, given that the two firms have manufactured the original PS3. The timing also makes sense, as Japan actually buys most of its game consoles during the summer vacation period (as opposed to the winter holidays in the west). Still, all of this info comes from anonymous sources, so take it with a very hearty helping of salt.

Assuming the news is true, it would mesh well with the PS3 Slim rumors we've heard so far, most notably that Ars Technica expected the units to hit the market in August or September. Add this to the string of rumors and leaks -- even some purported images of the unit itself -- and the PS3 Slim looks like it could be hitting the ground sooner rather than later.

Although we all know it was coming anyway, thanks to Sony not denying it when the pictures were released.

Thumbs down

While I certainly have no problem with a slimmer PS3, I don't think the images we have seen thus far are the real deal. Otherwise, I give thumbs down. That design is fugly--much prefer my big black monolith machine

I'll be picking up a second one once it drops in price (hopefully its a slim version) as I'm tired of replacing the laser in my current one.

mines is too loud. i cleaned it out with the vaccume like you suggested and i refuse to re apply any kind of solution on the CPU (refuse to open up my ps3)

so a new ps3 for my countless hours of gaming, and my 60gig can retire as a blu ray player. with the occasional ps2 game here and there.

Ya I'm tired of fixing mine every couple weeks too. The "reflow" fix seems like a temporary thing. The more I do it the less it works. Lasted about 2+ months the first time, but now it breaks pretty easy. Gonna fix it tonight again long enough to do a backup (hopefully), then it's bye bye 60GB PS3

How often do the Lasers go out in a PS3? What is thier life expectancy?

I don't know the statistics. What I do know is that I've had to replace the laser in my PS3 twice now. Original laser lasted approx 8-9 months, second laser lasted 7 months and cannot say if its a defect of the laser or the PS3, third laser is still working, which means I've spent $150. Therefore if I have to replace it again, it'll make it a tally of $220.

Failure rate on PS3's is quite low, but laser failure and YLOD (what mine had) are the common causes when a system does fail.

Default Bring on the rumors.

Will the failure rates increase on ps3 because of the handling by these 2 taiwanese companies for microsofts console?

Foxconn & Pegatron, are they autobots or decepticons?

Let it shine, let it shine on the new slim just like my original even if it's a dust magnet.
