Default PS3 manufacturing costs might break even as early as August.

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/04/21/...smaller-chips/

Analists are now predicting that August will be when the smaller chips will be used in the PS3. It'll be good news for everyone as smaller parts mean a cheaper console. In turn, it'll shift more consoles to peoples homes.

Awesome, bring on the newly redesigned PS3 (chip wise) - hopefully. A price drop for sure will bring the PS3 to more homes and help bring it closer to the 360's installed base!!!

This could be the one event that will popularize Blu-Ray's in every home. Many people are still skeptical of the PS3 because of the price. But with a price decrease, that could just do the trick. Now if they can get the price of those games down.

well look at Xbox 360 games they are not even Blu-Ray discs and yet they still sell them at same price as a PS3 game. i dont know why someone would spend $60 for a dvd game for xbox

This is good news for Sony, and hopefully good news for consumers assuming smaller chips means less power used/heat generated.

I'm not sure why you think Sony will then pass the savings on to us and continue to lose money on the hardware, but here's to hoping :b:

People buy video games for the content, not the storage vessel for that content.

I agree. I know this is where they make the money at, but there is more and more gamers increasing every year. Do they really need to raise the price of games by $10 every time they come out with a new console? Like I said before, whenever the next gen of consoles come out are they games going to be selling for $69?

I dunno about that. Neo Geo games were like $150. Factoring in inflation, some NES and SNES games were more.

The greatest thing about Blu-ray is the fact you can get a disc used, and know that it won't be scratched to the point of not functioning. I haven't paid over $40 for a single game (except Rock Band).

Cartidges cost a great deal more to make and take a lot longer to produce than optical discs. Back then, the per unit cost went into the selling price of the game, but nowadays, it really doesn't.

A BD50 is about $1.50. What you pay for with a game or movie isn't the plastic, it's what's on it.

The Next PS3 would be cool in a Slim Format.... Hella Cool, Although i know it isn't coming, it would still be nice. And are we talking about the production costs breaking even= the ps3 can have another price drop?

I would suspect that the PS3 may not have another price drop until closer to the holidays, and I would expect to see the xbox 360 have a price drop as well.

I was hoping they would drop a PS3 that was configured for standardized rack mount sizing (like most all decent home electronics components) so you could just stack it or mount it with all your other units.

According to analysts and others, the PS3 was breaking even or making money back when the 40GB models launched.

Studios need to stop acting like every game has to be a 20 mil budget title. Everyone is going into the red because they don't know how to make a game that will sell 1 mil instead of 10 mil.
