I have a Onkyo TX-SR804 receiver that does not decode the new blu-ray codecs. I am using a ps3 for my blu-ray player. Using a HDMI cable this receiver only supports Multichannel linear PCM (5.1 ch, 32–96 kHz, 16/20/24 bit). I want lossless 7.1 sound. (On the 10-15 blu rays discs that I own that have It). The receiver has 7.1 analog inputs. Am I better off getting a Panasonic DMP-BD80 that has 7.1 analog outputs or am I better spending about $50 more getting a refurbished Onkyo TX-SR607 which can decode DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD?

Your best bet is getting an onkyo. Lots of folks here have them and love em. I've got an 805 and I've never been disappointed with sound quality.
Marcos is right too though, the PS3 decodes the new formats, and sends it out via linear PCM. So basically you need a reciever that can handle 7.1 channels of decoded info, either through HDMI or analog outputs(which the ps3 doesnt have). Onkyo 605+ can handle this for ya. Edit: Your PS3 is a better blu-ray player then the panasonic, dont waste money on something thats redundant, and inferior. ![]() |

guys, he understands he needs a receiver that handles 7.1 PCM.
His Onkyo 804 does have HDMI, but only handles 5.1 PCM. The OP would like 7.1 PCM capability, which his 804 does not support... In all honesty, I think you should keep the 804. It should matrix any 5.1 PCM into 7.1 via a listening mode (but not positive though). If you decide to buy a new device, I would buy a new receiver. Not sure I would settle for a refurbished 607 though. I would save a little more money and buy something brand new, and perhaps better. ![]() |

That said, I agree with Crackin. Keep what you have unless you plan on going with another player. The 607 is a big step down in my opinion. |

Right now it seems only to matrix my tv satellite box signal, not my blu-ray from my ps3. There is a chart in the 804 manual on p. 61 regarding listening modes but I'm not sure if I'm reading it right. What receiver would you suggest in the sub-$750 range.

Yeah, you should keep that receiver unless you plan to make a true upgrade that will be more worthwhile. What you have is in most respects a better receiver that what you are looking to replace it with. If you are going to make the leap then look at a higher end receiver like a higher end Onkyo, Pioneer Elite, or a Marantz so you are getting ample power and an upgrade in sound quality, and not just added features at a cost to the power you already have with your current receiver.
