So I am getting rid of my Onkyo and today bought a Pioneer VSX-1019. Aside from my problem it's a great receiver so far. However, my problem is pretty big!
I have my PS3 in bitsteam mode so the receiver will decode the signal. However when I play Hellboy (the 7.1 DTS HDMA track) the receiver simply says DTS and only shows 5.1 speakers highlighted. Other 7.1 movies are the same. I have been through the often vague manual twice now. I have been through all of the SBch modes, I have all 7 speakers setup fine in the settings. I have tried the auto surround mode which auto detects best settings. I have tried standard mode which plays exactly what is coming from the PS3.. but it still just shows standard DTS and 5.1. I have even turned off the upmix and all that did was turn off the back surrounds because it is matrixing it the 5.1 signal. As a work around I can just set the PS3 to PCM and let it decode the signal but it is supposed to sound better to let the receiver do it. As a side note games do 7.1 just fine. If I load Wipeout HD the receiver shows PCM and all 7.1 speakers are highlighted. Any suggestions welcome! Last edited by statikcat; 06-06-2009 at 03:14 AM. |

Ok.. so I thought to myself.. what if this is a PS3 problem?!
Well I went into the Audio Output settings for HDMI and everything available is checked. However, there are no HD codecs listed here.. and all the 7.1 options are PCM. Am I missing something here? Can't the PS3 send 7.1 HD to my receiver in bitstream? |

Ag.. after doing some more research on the PS3 side it looks like it can't bitstream HD audio or 7.1! Well in this case I will just have to set it back to linear PCM and let the PS3 decode.

Hi statikcat. The PS3 will only bitstream the core DTS track and cannot bitstream the HD codecs. It can only decode them internally and send them via PCM. The only drawback is that you won't be able to see "Dolby TrueHD" or "DTS HD-MA" light up across the receiver's display, but you will have the same audio quality as if the receiver did the decoding. I have the same setup (PS3) but with the 1018 model.
