Default Pioneer VSX-1019 .. no 7.1 or HD codecs..

So I am getting rid of my Onkyo and today bought a Pioneer VSX-1019. Aside from my problem it's a great receiver so far. However, my problem is pretty big!

I have my PS3 in bitsteam mode so the receiver will decode the signal. However when I play Hellboy (the 7.1 DTS HDMA track) the receiver simply says DTS and only shows 5.1 speakers highlighted. Other 7.1 movies are the same. I have been through the often vague manual twice now. I have been through all of the SBch modes, I have all 7 speakers setup fine in the settings. I have tried the auto surround mode which auto detects best settings. I have tried standard mode which plays exactly what is coming from the PS3.. but it still just shows standard DTS and 5.1. I have even turned off the upmix and all that did was turn off the back surrounds because it is matrixing it the 5.1 signal.

As a work around I can just set the PS3 to PCM and let it decode the signal but it is supposed to sound better to let the receiver do it.

As a side note games do 7.1 just fine. If I load Wipeout HD the receiver shows PCM and all 7.1 speakers are highlighted.

Any suggestions welcome!

Ok.. so I thought to myself.. what if this is a PS3 problem?!

Well I went into the Audio Output settings for HDMI and everything available is checked. However, there are no HD codecs listed here.. and all the 7.1 options are PCM. Am I missing something here? Can't the PS3 send 7.1 HD to my receiver in bitstream?

Ag.. after doing some more research on the PS3 side it looks like it can't bitstream HD audio or 7.1! Well in this case I will just have to set it back to linear PCM and let the PS3 decode.

I have the same setup (PS3) but with the 1018 model.
Ha you beat me to my post. Yeah when I looked at the HDMI options it kind of hit me! Oh well in that case it's not the receiver fault just my PS3 ignorance! User error! hah. Well beside that this receiver is really excellent so far. The SQ is much better than my Onkyo. My speaker sound more lively!

I did the same thing. I upgraded from the Onkyo 605 and the difference was noticeable. I've been very happy with mine.

Yeah once the question of the PS3 popped in my head a quick google search was easy to find the answer. Mods feel free to del this post if you want.

Ok guys i just bought the vsx-1019 and just to test it out i connected an HDMI wire from the receiver to the TV (without any speakers connected) shouldn't the GUI show up? or do i have to have the speakers connected first? Thanks for the help.
