Default Blu Ray Turns TV Off

Strange but quite often when I put a blu-ray into my Sony Player, it will turn the TV off. Also, if a blu ray actually plays, when I turn the volume up or down that too can switch my TV off.

My player is connected via a cheap HDMI (I was told there's no real difference between a really cheap and a really expensive HDMI cable) and, for the life of me, I cannot figure out why it's doing it.

Any help/suggestions?

im just taking a shot in the dark here.... but i think you might have an issue with your tv and players remote control signal frequency (but even that sounds strange)

Just a guess but you might not be getting enough power to run both your TV and the BR player. When I first got my system a few years ago I was told that the actual most important thing you can have for your set up (as far as picture quality goes) is to have the right amount of power coming to your player and TV. Apparently bluray players use a rather large amount of power. Some surge protectors don’t let enough power through or you might just have to much hooked up to one outlet.

It might be an issue with the HDMI handshake between the two devices. You can turn the option off. It hard to say what it's called since different companies call it different things. And if your tv an blu-ray player are from different manufacturers, then they won't work together and sometimes cause issues like this. I think mine is call HDMI-CEC or something like that.

That might be it, even if they're different brands, sometimes they do work, the weird thing is that it turns the tv off, usually it only turn the tv on or changes the input in your tv.

Is TV turned on when you load the disk? Starting the BD player may actually be toggling the TV power on/off.
I have a Panny bdp30, Sony Bravia TV and Sony 5300 AVR. My usual startup is to have TV and amp in standby, load disc into BD player and it turns on TV and amp . If you use this procedure or a similar one and the TV is already on then it is possible it may be toggled off,,If you follow what am saying...

+1 I have a sammy tv and a sammy bd and they control one another through Anynet. I turn on the BD player and my tv comes on and changes to the correct input setting even thou I have all HDMI cables running through my Denon. It was weird at first but I have grown to like it now.

I think the above post are correct about it being a handshake issue, turn off all options on the tv and start there.

I had that problem with anynet. I shut it off. Not all hdmi cables are equal...I'd try using a different hdmi cable that is 1.3 and try handshake thing.
