Default FCC filing points to 250GB PS3 Slim

An FCC filing indicates that Sony has created a 250GB variant of the recently-announced PS3 Slim. Despite efforts to conceal the company name as "Sand Dollar Enterprise, Inc." and the product as a "Computer Entertainment System," the documents were still spotted by PS3 News.

The 120GB PS3 Slim, labeled CECH-2000A, was confirmed on Tuesday, while the unannounced 250GB variant is listed as CECH-2000B. The Slim consoles utilize smaller Cell and RSX processors, helping to cut the weight and volume down while retaining all of the PS3's standard features.

Pricing and launch dates for the 250GB Slim remain unknown, although customers will be able to purchase the 120GB model for $299 beginning in September. Reports suggest the current 160GB PS3 will see a price reduction down to $399. [via Engadget]

i think i saw this on Joystiq a few hours ago but as someone on there mentioned, plenty of stuff has been filed before and never materialsed. White PS3s in EU and USA as one example.

Im sure a 250 will come at some point but i tihnk it might be 6 months or so to allow the 120 to get some steam.

I have a 40 GB PS3 and have yet to encounter any storage problems. What are people doing with their PS3s that would necessitate 250GB?

lots of games with large installs, lots of PSN titles, maybe using it as a PVR with PlayTV, storing all their music videos and stuff on it.

Lots of show downloading off PSN? I mean, I don't, but I image many people do.

Personally I used to store all my videos I shot with my digi cam onto a dvd for storage, but now they just go straight to the ps3 hdd where I can view em on my hdtv. All my vids and pics probably take up about.....8 gigs or so...I also intend to get a HD camcorder in the future, so 120/250gig hdd is pretty nice.

OK, I didn't realize people downloaded so much stuff from the PSN. Personally, I've only been there a handful of times and what I saw didn't compel me to return very often. As far as videos and pictures go, I burn them all to disc on my PC so they have some degree of permanence. I wouldn't trust any device with that sort of stuff.

I tend to travel light when it comes to games, trading in old for new, so I guess I'll never run into a storage problem.

I wish they would just release all playstations with large hard drives and quit making so many different models.

Why should a guy like me, who has a 40GB PS3 that has never been anywhere near full, want to pay extra for a 250GB model?

A bundle with 250 GB of HDD space or more would only be worth $100 more than the 120 GB PS3 slim if it included extra accessories or some games. If it does materialize, I wonder what they would include...

Economy of scale. What you don't realize is that the actual cost difference between say a 120GB and 500GB is $10... probably even less when you are talking about millions of units. When SONY charges $100 to jump to a higher GB with no other additional benefits that is pretty much all profit. Fortunately their bigger units usually are bundled with a game to offset this. But back to my point, if they just all used one big hard drive the consumers win.
