Unhappy Messed up my surround back setup...can you help?

Hi,

So I just moved and after doing a million things I finally went to put up my speaker system.

After drilling into the wall, when I looked at the surround back speakers..they looked odd...I dont think I put enough space between based on wall area. However, my front left speaker is almost up against its furtherest most point.

I've attached some pictures and also created a gallery to get the awesome advice of fellow members. I had to splice 3 pics together for the shot looking to the back wall from my center speaker location so my apologies.

Can you let me know what you would suggest?

Thank you very much

Any questions, let me know!

I would have widened the rears out considerably more, 1'-2' from the corners. Or placed them on the side walls, even or slightly behind your seating, pointing toward each other. You may want to mount your fronts and widen them out also.

Thanks for your reply.

1. I don't think I can mount the fronts as the wall you see in the picture, is about 2.5feet behind where the TV is...it's kinda hard to tell.

2. The problem I thought with moving the surround left speaker closer to the side wall (red wall) is that my front left speaker can't really go any more as my stairs are right there.

Thanks again!

Have you thought about placing the surrounds in the corners?

Thanks for the reply.

Again Im not sure how far I should set out the left surround as I can't also move the front left further out. Know what I mean?

Thanks

I've seen this picture as a guideline for setting up a 5.1 system. You are using 5. 1 right? not 7.1?

I'd put them in the corners near or at the angle suggested. My room dimensions are abnormal, so I had to compromise with my 7.1 setup. But if your room allows for it, I'd use the recommended speaker placements and test it.

If you don't like it after that, move them to where you think they sound good to you.

Thanks! Hmmm maybe I'll try that....by that pic I figure I should probably set them a foot higher on the wall and maybe 2-3 feet more out.

As for height, I prefer mine about 2-3 feet above my ear level where I sit, pointed down at the couch/chair whatever.

Good luck, you'll find that arranging them is fun, just take your time with different setups...once you get it right, you'll know.

My other thought was to use the ceiling mounts but decided against it. I'd prefer to keep them on the wall.

Also, any other suggestions for hiding the wires?

Thanks

You can hide the wires by fishing them through the walls (the hard way - but a much cleaner look) or you can run them along the baseboards and paint the wires the same color as the wall. It won't be perfect, but it's easier and cheaper than running them through the walls.

+1

It's really not that hard and it does turn out really clean. I did it with my surrounds. I fished them straight down from the hanging position and then ran them underneath the baseboards behind the carpet tack strips. They come out of a wall plate right behind the lower middle of the wall that the TV is on. The runs are about 32ft and are 14awg in wall speaker cable.

Home Depot also sells wire "raceways" that you can use to conceal the wires. They can also be painted to match the walls. They also look nice.

If it's your house, you can do whatever you want and you might as well do it right.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the holes you made, nothing a little putty and paint won't fix.

The diagram posted above was what I was trying to explain about the surround placement , I think you would be happier with them out like that.

Enjoy!

Thumbs up

so last night I repositioned the back speakers and I think they are much better now.

Thanks to everyones feedback and suggestions.

I very crudely updated my gallery with where the speakers are now. Once I get an actual camera and not my cell phone one I'll take better pics for a real gallery.

Thanks again
