Default What Kind of Sound Am I Getting? Lossy or Lossless

I use a PS3 as my blu-ray player which is connected to my Onkyo TX-SR804 via an HDMI cable. I actually have it set up for 7.1 sound. The receiver can matrix Dolby Digital 5.1 to the for surround speakers with my satellite tv receiver but cannot do so with blu-ray discs on my PS3. The manual for my receiver says its Supported Audio Formats are:
• 2-channel linear PCM (32–192 kHz, 16/20/24 bit)
• Multichannel linear PCM (5.1 ch, 32–96 kHz, 16/20/24 bit)
• Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS)

My PS3 is set to PCM because I thought by reading the forums that it does not bitstream lossless codecs.

I think the PS3 can decode all codecs, but what is my receiver actually playing Dolby True HD, DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1 or something else? Thanks for your input.

on whatever disk you're watching, just press "SELECT" on the PS3 remote, and it will tell you in the top right corner what audio you're playing at.....

Also make sure you go to the audio-setup for each disc, because sometimes they default to Dolby Digital 5.1 when an HD-MA or Linear PCM track is available.

Thanks Betaman. Would that give me the same result as pushing the display button on the PS3 remote? When I play the Star Trek Blu-rays or 3:10 to Yuma when I hit display it says 7.1 dts and my manual says it can only decode 5.1 pcm. I guess my question is if my PS3 decodes it and passes it through HDMI what will my receiver play? Does the decoding by the PS3 allow my receiver to play lossless audio?

same result..... I'm pretty sure it'll take the 5.1 and play it on your 7.1 speaker setup, but with only 5.1 discrete channels.....

I think you'd be better off changing the audio options on the disc to 5.1 HD-MA, or True-HD or PCM etc.
