Default Moving to UC Davis...

I'm moving in a month. Should I buy a new TV or keep my old one?

Any security tips for a blu-ray enthusiast living in a college town? I'm only bringing a fraction of my collection. And of course, you guys.

And I was thinking of bolting the TV down on the stand but that sounds absurd. I know every other bike gets stolen there.

What brand is the old TV ? If you buy a new one, what is your budget ? Please be sure to insure all of your belongings!

I have an exactly 2-year-old Samsung LN40A550. I know it's not a bad TV but a few of my friends got TV's last year and it already looks inferior to them. I'll have about $1000 to spend. I obviously don't need one, but I could keep my 550 here and enjoy the new one during the school year (minus surround sound).

I'd keep that $$$ and invest in buying new movies you want . Like out of the 1000$, i'd spend 200$ on movies and the rest ,put it at the bank in a savings account.

The TV, you have i'd keep at home because i would be scared of getting my stuff stolen.

I'd just bring the minimum. Ex: Laptop, clothes etc...

Option 1 : Well, go to parents on week-ends

Option 2 : Invest in a laptop with blu-ray drive.

1- Weekends are reserved for work, girlfriend, and studying.

2- Mine has one, but I prefer my TV by far. Thanks for your suggestions man.

Davis is a relatively safe town. Just dont be stupid.

AAA gave me renters insurance, including several options such as liability (ie $40,000 for my dog biting someone) and 10,000 coverage for $110 a year (much of it off set by a 5% decrease in auto coverage).

If you are moving for college, keep it simple. If you party or drink, save your money for that. If you are a homebody nerd, use your drinking money for BD's and a TV. DONT DO BOTH. In case you have not heard, college costs a lot of money, and if you are a student at a UC, nothing is stopping them from doubling fees.

You dont have $1000 for a TV, because if you throw away money on that to keep up with your friends, and put $1000 of debt, you will be paying 5 or 6% interest on it for 10 damn years (with a student loan)

My mom paid $75 at Cal a semester. My sister, about 30 years later paid about $2500 her first semester, and about $9000 her last semester. My girlfriend next year is paying about $15,000. With California's financial problems, and UC's facing a 20%+ budget cut, I am willing to bet tuition will go up.

Over 4 years of borrowing, it is not out of the question to be paying $1,000 or more a month on loans if you piss off your money on stuff you dont need.

Let me put it this way, I am sleeping on the same sh*tty bed for the last 6 or 7 years. I have a VIZIO because my other TV broke. I have about $34,000 in debt, and make about $20,000 less with my education than I did with a high school diploma. Booo!
BTW, I had about $30,000 in grands and scholarships, made about $40,000 a year, and still racked up a cars worth of debt. Now I cant find a job.

Wow thanks for that post, that was a mindful. Just because I have the money doesn't mean I should spend it. I drink occasionally but I don't think I will be that involved in my social life considering I am a bio major. I'm ultimately studying medicine in two years, and takin the MCAT's next year. I have scholarships and grants, but if I buy a TV for the heck of it now, who's to say I'm any different down the road when financial management will actually be an issue for me? Thanks for the insight. Buying a brand new TV is not a good way to start at an expensive university. Saving a $1000 is.

By the way CONGRATS! I grew up in Davis, go back there every few months to visit the family lmao...so congratulations!!! I came to Los Angeles to study at UCLA lol. Anyway, i was in the same boat you were, so i waited until my third year to buy my new system. Once i had gotten my new apartment and all, i finally went out to buy it. It is up to you, but about living in a college town. Davis is amazing. I personally don't think you should be worried about anyone stealing your TV. Let me know if you need any more tips

Wow good job. I got into UCLA but they didn't offer me much so I took the fat scholarship at Davis. It's nice there though, I'm sure I won't have any problems... I mean, bike theft is a bit different than home burglary, especially considering there are almost more bikes than people there and they have their own street lights. Thanks for the info bro and good job on UCLA.

I would keep the TV and save the money. I would also buy a stand which you can bolt the TV on. Odds are if someone is going to steal a TV they aren't going to take the time (or have the tools) to unscrew it from a stand.
