Default Blu-ray - DVD - in reverse

I was just wondering,

For all of those (and I imagine there are a lot here) that went through the DIVX/DVD format war, isn't this a big case of deja vu, but in reverse.

I went and bought one of the first DVD players to support DVD, cause DIVX sucked - hard.

Back then, everything was reversed. Warner led the charge for DVD, and Disney, Fox, (I forget who else) were huge DIVX supporters.

Back then, blockbuster was on the sidelines and wouldn't support DVD. I canceled my membership there and had to go with mom-and-pop stores, until Hollywood Video finally started renting DVDs. Blockbuster was almost the last rental chain to jump on the bandwagon, and now they are first.

Back then electronics stores took sides - Circuit City let the DIVX charge, now everyone seems to be content with getting splinters in their ass while they ride the fence.

Now, just like then, when I see a trailer for a movie I have to look at which studio is making them to see if I'll get it on my format. Didn't think I'd have to go through that again.

It's not easy being an early adopter of any format, especially one that is activally at war with another. Many of my friends are still on the fence, although most see my points for Blu-ray.

No one thanked us for vanquishing the DIVX monster (most never knew it existed and even know only speak of it like some ill-remembered ghost story). And no one will thank us in the future when they are plopping in their new Blu-ray movie with PiP, with TRUE-HD, DTS-HD, etc., etc., and all sorts of bells and whistles we even never thought of.

So, I'll just say it for them.

Thanks everyone, keep up the good fight.

Take it easy,
