Default PS3 firmware update 1.82

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/...2-coming-soon/

This update includes 'high profile AVC'.

Not sure I understand, because PS3 is allready able to plays AVC.

I hope it means it will play back AVC from the panasonic HDC-SD1. The camcorder records in AVCHD onto SD cards, but when you put the card into the PS3 you can't play any of the video. I was a little bummed because it would have been really convenient to watch home videos without having to hook up the camera to the TV or burning them onto a disc.

Of course I have no idea if that is what the update is for, but here is to hoping

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
High Profile (HiP): The primary profile for broadcast and disc storage applications, particularly for high-definition television applications (this is the profile adopted into HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, for example).
Anybody know the specific picture quality differences we may see with (for example) PlayStation Store trailers encoded in this format compared to what's currently used? At the same bitrate it must be more capable somehow..

Theres probably not much difference. But its a nice feature to have.

Will sony be releasing trailers in this format then?

Anyway I hate small 0.01 updates! Why can they work on a big bugger lol.

Just because they've finished a single feature that they think is important to get out ASAP, it doesn't mean they're not already well into completing a bunch of other features. They probably have several small development teams.

I know lol. It duznt stop me from getting annoyed. Like when the ps3 says I need to update, I get excited then it says version 1.81 lmao. 1.80 was no doubt the best and most exciting.

All i wanna c is the xmb to be accessable in games so you can chat with other mate ect. Just make the xmb like the 360 when your online, irl be happy lol.

The PS3 now plays the HD TS files I captured off cable. (This used to work just fine but broke somewhere around the 1.6 release - maybe earlier).

It's only a small update atm.

I don't feel that it's worthy of being downloaded (except maybe for users that use Nero Mediahome)...but that's just me.

I still think it's too small of a version upgrade so I won't bother upgrading it.

HP AVC added support for variable block sizes, and now stuff (ripped Weinstein HD DVDs) encoded in HP AVC can be playedback from the HDD or other source in and MP4 container rather than just BDMV.

So AVC files ripped from HD-DVDs can be played flawlessly on the PS3? Uhm...

Sorry, I don't get this new update, what does it actually do? plays a new video format? What can I get in that format? Will it now play quicktime HD movies without conversion or something?

All help appreciated!

There are two small unannounced changes that I have noticed.

1.) On the XMB game exit/system shutdown screen it now says "charge complete" when the SIXAXiS is plugged in an fully charged.

2.) Background downloading seems to now work with PSN games played off of the hard drive. In the past it only worked with games that were played off of BD discs.

I also heard that they added more PS1/PS2 compatibility. I don't know if it's true or not, but that was the rumor.

the only thing that I heard was 'advanced' AVC ...I think that's what it was called...

not sure what that is or anything else that took me 20 minutes to download..

Yeah that's what was said in the official announcement. The thing is though that the Sony firmware engineers like to add little tweaks here and there even in the minor firmware upgrades.

Full USB mouse support in XMB and Internet browser, full screen pop up keyboard in the Internet browser, and the addition of a pause button on the download management menu were unannounced tweaks that appeared on previous firmwares.

Does high profile AVC allow for a higher picture quality or is it just more efficient?
