I think they have them for computers etc..... maybe there is a stand-alone available, but if not, I'd expect one eventually (they just released a portable player, so a recorder is inevitable)

I guess the market just has to catch up with some more demand for it first.

Recorders record, Players play. Where's the confusion? They do make stand alone Blu-ray recorders, but unfortunately are only sold in Japan at this time. You can however purchase Blu-ray burners for your computer.

Blu-ray disc recorders are on sale in the UK too (though the one I looked at says it can take 1-2 months to despatch. I think the official release date for them in the UK is 31/07/2009.
eg. Panasonic DMR-BS750 250GB HDD HD Blu-ray Recorder With Freesat).

How long did it take for DVD stand-alone recorders to hit the market? Was it about 10 years?

As others have pointed out, Blu-ray recorders are available in some markets but not yet in the US. The recorders are expensive, as is the recordable media.

Less than five. I bought my DMR-E80 in the summer of 2003 (when the format was just over six years old), and it was part of what was I think the third generation of recorders for Panasonic. They were pricey, though, and I eventually quit using mine for most tasks. I nowarchive most home movies on the computer (using a MiniDV camera, connecting to a PC via FireWire, and using DVD authoring software and a $50 DVD-R drive gives me better results), use a DVR from my cable company to time-shift TV shows (it works better and lets me time-shift HD), and only use the E80 for archiving VHS tapes to DVD. I don't think I've even turned it on in the last year or so.

where is the confusion? Dvd Recorders record and play so why doesn,t Blueray, I'm talking about recording off of a TV same way a VCR and DVD recorder does! if you can play DVD in a blueray player then eventually you should be able to tape on to a DVD on a blueray player

Yo, you should not be arguementative with people who are trying to help you understand especially since you are a newbie. A BD Player can not record because it does not have that feature built into it - PERIOD. Yes you are confused.

Since no one else has pointed out to you yet, I will be nice as others are not so much sometimes, but when on this site make sure you spell the medium correctly..its Blu-ray. Not BlueRay or blueray. These guys can be pretty tough sometimes

I don't think he (op) was being argumentative.... you (E55) basically told him he was asking a dumb question, which wasn't necessary.

Welcome aboard OP. As stated.... eventually car units, recorders, and even the "Disney Themed" Princess T.V.s with built in Blu-ray players will be available in stores..... The format is still in its infancy... when more people own HDTVs etc.... things will catch up.

Blu-ray recorders are not in the U.S. because of the DVR. The DVR is more popular in U.S. households then DVD recorders. As a result Blu-ray recorders have not been sold in the U.S. (it comes down to cost v. sales). In other markets, such as Japan, it is the opposite the recorder is much more popular then the DVR.

darmitage, beta man was sticking up for you, he was saying you were NOT being argumentative. He is trying to help and answer your question.

Now you are being defensive. Just remain calm, ignore the comment if you don't think it is right or disagree with what someone says.

Sometime in the near future it is possible that an option would be available to record tv onto a DVD using your Blu-Ray player or just record the data directly to the player. Really there isn't much of a need to record TV to a DVD with DVR's so abundant. Blu-Ray recorders are just not widely available at this time.

Blu-ray recorders will both play Blu-ray and record Blu-ray. There are none on the market in the US yet (as several posts have pointed out), and the ones that are available in other markets (Japan or Australia, for example) are very expensive. Eventually we will see those devices come to the US market, but so far it hasn't happened. If you want a device like this, you can either pay a hefty premium and import one or wait for one to be released here.

Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray, but they will not record to Blu-ray blank media. They will also play DVD's, both commercial discs and DVD-R's that have been recorded using DVD recorders or DVD-R drives in computers, but they will not record to DVD-R. This is because the disc drives that support Blu-ray playback do not support DVD-R recording. You need a recording-capable drive for that, at which point you have also built in Blu-ray recording capability and you're back to that expensive product that no companies have introduced into the US market.

DVD recorders and video cassette recorders will both record. DVD players will not record. Same premise as with Blu-ray.
