Default When will the Blu-ray recorders be available?

I am thinking of investing in a DVD rewriter drive, but am having second thought because of the blueray. Will it be incorporated into a internal PC drive? If so how much do you reckon the blueray will be available for?

well dvd recorders are cheap so you may as well buy one. Blu Ray recorders and discs are at least a year away and 2 years from being affordable but the wait will be worth it.

discs will be expensive at first. Currebtly $50 for 25GB disc, $70 for 50GB.

Both HP and Dell will be putting Blu-ray drives in upcoming PCs so that'll help to drive the prices down dramatically. My guess is that when BDRoms come to market they'll cost $5-10 each with rewriteables a bit more. Look how dirt cheap DVD-Rs are already.

Remember RAM disks were £20 at the beginning. Not sure how much dvd-rs were. But quite expensive also.

There's lot's of talk about the format over on the UK AV Forums. The dilema as always is 'Do I buy what is available now' or 'Wait until the next big thing is available'. The reality is of course that there is always something new; though in this instance the format is quite an evolutionary step. Well perhaps not, more of a new breed.

I'm in the market for a DVD Player. Looking at HDMI enabled players for about £500 ($960) in the UK whilst tempting is also slightly disconcerting if one is going to be blown out of the water with Blu-Ray / High Def Players in the short to medium term.... though the current impression appears to be that these players will not be available for a while and even when they are they will come with a weighty price tag.

The other option for me is to buy a 'cheap' DVD Player (£100 and without HDMI/Progressive Scan etc) but then suffer from poor quality source output to a £1000 AV & £15000 PJ... :?

Being objective about this, even if I were to wait for BD players to come into the UK market, I'm reliant on the discs being available with HD content. If I'm only going to play bog standard DVD's on it anyway, I'm not necessarily going to get a HD output am I?

Unfortunately I have no idea which pace Blu-ray will be available in the UK. I do believe the format will grow faster than most predict and may in fact skyrocket after HD-DVD is officially dead. I fully expect Sony to give the format a big push with hundreds of movies available from their own Columbia label alone. Add to that Disney, Fox, and Dreamworks and there should be a pretty decent selection within a couple of years of next fall's launch. By then I believe all the studios will be supporting Blu-ray, though the ones coming in late obviously won't have nearly as many titles available. In short, none of us who buy a Blu-ray deck will be short on movies to buy for the format. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Assuming that Blu-Ray players will be released sometime 2006 and at a hefty premiuim (£1,000-£1,500!?), and that the PS3 is also released early/mid 2006, (with Blu-Ray playback and £300), I'll be buying a PS3. Although, relatively it will be a poor BR player, it should still give pictures significantly better than dvd. And if BR fails to catch on, and hd-dvd succeeds, then you've only spent £300 and still have the PS3 for next gen gaming. If BR succeds then I'll be looking to buy a decent BR recorder sometime 2010. By then prices will have come down, quality/spec up, (Huge TByte hdd drive etc).
