Hello all, I am glad I found this forum. I am not a wiz and I need advice. I purchased a 65" Mitsubishi DLP HDTV (1080p) this past Dicember. I then got a Toshiba upconvering DVD player that lasted 5 months but gave me incredible picture. Now I got the new Blu-Ray Samsung BD-P1600. I bought "Black Halk Down" (1991), "Enter the Dragon" and "U-571" on Blu-Ray. I CAN NOT SEE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE upconverting and the BD. I have a HDMI cables with everything (HD cable box, TV, and BD)... powered by a YAMAHA RX-V665 receiver. Is it that the TV is too big and I will not be able to see detail as good as on a 40" flat screen?... I have also heard of "CALIBRATING " the TV but it costs $300.00 dollars to have it done by Best Buy......
Do I have to do something to the TV? BD? Please advice. Thank you |

I don't know about "Black Hawk Down" or "U-571", but I have "Enter the Dragon" on both Blu-ray and DVD, and it isn't exactly what I would call the greatest example of a "major" improvement. There are several good examples of improvement in detail to be found through the movie, though. Compare the scene with all the street signs around the 10 minute mark. You can actually read a lot of the signs that are a blur on the DVD. The "One Way Only" sign, or the words "Turkish Steam Bath" above the yellow massage sign for example. It really depends on the source, and your personal preferences and expectations. I suggest you view one of my favorites, "No Country For Old Men". If you lean more towards "pop" or an enhanced image, or what I call over the top, then check out "Speed Racer" or "The Dark Knight". Also, get a Sony title as I believe all Sony Blu-rays have hidden test patterns on them that can help you get your alignments close.

I have the same Blu-ray player and I have an older 65 inch Mitsubishi DLP 1080i Tv that I use with component cables, it doesn't have any DVI or HDMI inputs. I see a great deal of difference when I compare it to an upconverter dvd that I view at my aunt's house. Comparing the same movies there is a great deal of difference between clarity, image quality and detail. It might be the movies you are viewing, I haven't compared those, or you just might want to check the Blu-ray players settings. Just go through the menu and in the display option check to see if the Resolution is set to 1080p. Just incase you changed the Resolution on the HDMI option and not on the display. I can't remember if there is a seperate display option for the HDMI selection in the menu.

Thank you gentlemen,
I was reading the BD manual this morning and it sets the resolution aumaticaly. When I turn the TV and BD, the TV displays DVD 1080P. S I am asuming it is on 1080. These machines are so complex that it takes a lot to figure out how to set it right. Any comments on TV CALIBRATION??? |

I have a 60" Samsung DLP set and I can definitely see the difference between upconverted DVD's and Blu-ray 1080P such as brighter colors and less fuzziness/graininess. I never had the set calibrated. I, like the others, haven't viewed the movies your talking about so I can't speak about them. Did you try typical troubleshooting techniques like bypassing the receiver and going direct to the TV to see if your getting degradation or swapping/changing cables? I doubt that's the case but it's worth a try.

I will watch The Dark night as many have suggested. It could be that the movies I have watched are not that good on Blu-Ray. I will let you know.
Thank you again. |

For testing, connect the BD player directly to TV set via HDMI cable. Check whether the Tv displays 1080p on the screen for movies. It is possible that BD player is locked into a lower res mode in which case you need to reset it.
(Always switch of all units before changing HDMI cables) |
