Default Buy/Rent Debate

I've recently begun to question if I should continue to buy Blu-ray, rather than simply subscribe to Netflix. As a child, I collected cards and comic books. As an adult, I've collected CDs and DVDs. Given what little use I have for things I've collected previously, I can't help but wonder if my time and money would be better spent on other things. For example, w/ Netflix I'd pay $11/month and my only worry would be receiving damaged Blu-rays. If I continue to buy, I'll spend much more than that /month and deals will dictate what I buy.

I've done the same thing throughout my adult life. Clothes, shoes, CD's, standard DVD's, etc... If you are a creature of habit and like collecting things, then by all means, start with Blu Ray's. I didn't have any blu rays until this year if that helps. I NEVER paid full retail for any them. There's deals to be had all the time. Amazon, eBay, etc...

Good luck and happy collecting!!!

I just did it. I was spending a fortune on DVDs and Blus. I would stick them on the shelves and re-watch only a very few.

A couple weeks ago I sold about 55 Blus and last week, I started Netflex. Going to get to watch all the movies and purchase only the ones that I know I will watch over.

I am going to save a couple hundred $$$ a month in purchasing movies that I want to watch but would watch once.

I can't buy anymore without deals. (Though, that said, I've bought several in the last 2 months that were on sale that I wouldn't have otherwise bought --- Taken, T2, I Robot, and Twister).

I should have rented Taken, and just shouldn't have bought the other 3.

For now on, unless it's a big thing I want (some TV shows, Braveheart, LOTR, etc.), I'll be renting at Blockbuster for $2/night.

yeah I get 2 to 3 blus from them a week and they play fine in general. I just make sure I inspect the disc by reflecting a light on it and then clean it thoroughly before playing it

I've only got 15 for good reason as well.

I blind bought 1, and only watched it once. Kinda urks me.

Now I've got to be sure I'm going to watch it several times or what's the point in owning it.

Oh ya, Camp Rock wasn't for me!

I probably do about 95% renting and 5% buying. I would so many movies that I would never buy and am picky (=cheap) about the ones I buy.

I rent first. Always.
Unless I know the movie and know I will watch it often.

I do the Netflix deal and it has saved me money and arguments from the wife!

I am even beginning to get rid of some of my old collectables that I have bought over the years...some at a nice profit!

Haven't rented a movie in at least 5 years if not more.
I see movies at the cinema first then I buy or don't.

There are certain movies that you buy 'just to have' but never end up watching.

Everyone does it, the trick is to figure out which movies those are, and don't buy them.

Rent first. I've watched MANY discs from Netflix and have yet to have a bad one. The only limitation seems to be the firmware updates. I've managed to keep my Blu's down to a small lot of enjoyable movies I can watch almost any time.
