If you don't have HDMI (repeater not pass through) on your AVR you will never get lossless audio from the PS3. Even if you upgraded to an AVR w/ HDMI you will never get bitstreamed HD Audio only PCM (decoded by the PS3). Also, the PS3 doesn't have analog outs so even if your AVR has analog ins you still won't get lossless. If your AVR has analog ins you could get a different BR player that has analog outs and get lossless without replacing the AVR.

So if you want lossless with the PS3 you will have to upgrade to a AVR with HDMI.

Edit: looking at the back of your AVR it does have analog ins (labeled EXT IN). So if you wanted lossless w/o upgrading the AVR you need to get a BR with analog outs.

Yea, like the above post, you either need a bluray player with Analogs, or a receiver that accepts HDMI...

Nope. That BR player does not have analog outs. The BDP-2500 has them (7.1), but yours only has 2 channel analog outputs.

To get lossless now you would need a box that converted HDMI to analogs. I don't know of any such box, but if you found one it would probably be pricey. But, if you did that and your BR player only had one HDMI output you would not be able to use it for video unless the box also passed the HDMI out as well.

I still think your best option is to either upgrade the AVR or BR player if you want lossless audio.

This would probably work, but it might not sound great. I still recommend an upgrade (AVR would be the best upgrade IMHO). Multiple HDMI inputs will pay off down the road.

I have a 3805 and I'm not willing to give it up just yet.

Two points to consider:

1. Yes, there's an HDMI/PCM to analog box available for PS3 owners. But, it offers no bass management or distance adjustments and has unknown DACs. With those kinds of limitations, the audio output is likely going to be worse than what you are getting now.

2. You may nor hear any improvement from lossless. I have my BD55 hooked up with analog and S/PDIF and I rarely hear a difference. Improvements are subtle, at best. The DTS core at 1509 mbps and DD 5.1 tracks at 640 kbps sound great. Legacy tracks are less compressed on BD than on DVD. So you don't need lossless to get significant audio improvements from Blu.

If you really want lossless, I'd suggest getting a decoding player with analog outs instead of a new AVR. An Oppo would give you lossless and add SACD and DVD-Audio playback for half the price of an AVR to replace your fine 3805.

And the only reason why i was thinking upgrade is cause I thought I was actually missing something but numerous people have told that im really not and its gonna be hard to replace the sound quality of my 3805 without droppin another grand! Im keeping it for sure!
