What is the UK edition? Is it the Unrated or Rated. Is it any different to the North American edition?

I tried lol. The UK was the edition to own back in the day. It didn't have the digitally altered people. Now the latest Kubrick release is the one how Kubrick originally intended. No censorship boards etc. Nothing to worry about except it is cropped.

So, now, is there any difference between the UK and the North American releases? Is the UK not cropped? |

I don't know if the UK version is cropped or not. However, to my eye at least, the cropped version has a much more aesthetically pleasing composition (and it matches the theatrical aspect ratio). The uncropped 4:3 version turns close-ups into medium shots, medium shots into long shots, and in general distances the viewer from the action more than is necessary.

Many people state that Stanley Kubrick wanted his films presented in 1.33:1 but its hard to prove if this is his true intent. It has been confirmed that after the severe 1.33:1 pan & scan job done by the BBC for 2001: A Space Odyssey, he wanted his films framed for widescreen but shot 1.33:1 safe. This was so that the composition of the film would not be compromised by loss of image when presented in standard television format. There was a book released on The Shining which shows a storyboard of a shot with Kubrick's notes and it does not confirm that he wanted the film in 1.33:1. It does confirm that he notated to the cinematographer to add space at the top and bottom to protect for 1.33:1 exhibitions. Last edited by steve_dave; 08-01-2009 at 11:40 PM. |

Kubrick's storyboard example for the Shining states that 'the frame is exactly 1.85:1, you compose for that. But protect the full 1.33:1 area'. If he did that for The Shining, I have no doubt that he would do the same for Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut. All three look very well in widescreen, too.

Widescreen really ruins the picture in Eyes wide shut. Anyone who got any sense on photographing, realise that Eyes wide shut is meant to be 4:3 format. In that format every scene looks perfect.
And same goes to Full metal jacket too! I´m not gonna buy blu ray before those movies are released in 4:3 format. I think you can see it with own your eyes, and don´t have to think what master Kubrick would think about it. Last edited by Sweeney Todd; 08-04-2009 at 08:17 PM. |

I love this movie! It's so crazy! When he sneaks into the "party" and everyone has masks on, but you can see everyone's eyes, and they're all looking at him! OMG it's so freaky. and the music.....
