Default Lite-On IT to begin production of BD Combo drives in 4Q07

Jimmy Hsu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES

With Pioneer unveiling its first Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo drive (BDC-S02) in May for sale at a recommended retail price of US$299, Lite-On IT plans to start production of its BD Combo drives in the fourth quarter of this year, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

The sources cited Lite-On IT's relationship with Royal Philips Electronics as the rational for entering the business. The two companies are partners in a joint venture for producing optical drives (Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions) and Philips is a charter member of the BD Association.

However, Lite-On IT only commented that, as an ODM maker, it will produce optical disc drives of various types depending on its clients' needs.

Sony, Matsushita Electric Industrial (with Panasonic as a brand name) and other Japanese brands also plan to offer BD Combo drives in a bid to promote the BD standard, the sources indicated

Took me a bit to catch what was meant by combo drive here. Been around the film side too much I think .

So because of my ignorance, I will share, PC Burner/Reader combination .

Which makes sense when you look at the companies involved.
